PlayStation Rumor Roundup: From Software, Guerrilla Games and Mysterious Trademarks

Rumors_PlayStation_Extra_ExtraIt’s May, and nearly a month away from the Electronic Entertainment Expo, E3 2014, in Los Angeles. PlayStation 4 has been tearing up the sales charts globally since November, and big games like Killzone: Shadow FallinFAMOUS: Second Son and more have been keeping gamers busy. But everyone wants to know what’s next–with titles like DriveClubThe Order: 1886, and The Last of Us: Remastered Edition coming, there’s still a hunger for the Next Big Thing.

Sony has typically been great with exclusive content, especially at the tail end of the PS3 lifecycle, but there haven’t been any major announcements of new intellectual property (IP) from Sony Computer Entertainment since last year. But that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning with talk of new games, new partnerships, and mysterious trademarks that could hint to the future of the PS4. Without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the big PlayStation rumors through the beginning of May.

From Software “Project Beast”

Project Beast

This rumor began its rounds on 4chan, and comes to us via NeoGAF. A user on the forums posted screenshots that are allegedly from a trailer for an unannounced game from the developers behind Demon Souls and Dark Souls, From Software. The game, tentatively titled “Project Beast,” is apparently a partnership between From Software and Sony Computer Entertainment, which may mean that the title is in exclusive development for a PlayStation console. Further investigating the leak, Dualshockers spoke with “industry insiders” who confirmed that the working title is correct, and also noted the trailer they were capped from is over two months old.

Check out this gallery of screenshots from the trailer, and decide for yourself whether this might be the first PS4 game from the makers of March’s Dark Souls II:

New Guerrilla Games IP Reveal At E3?

Killzone: Shadow Fall was more Killzone at the launch of PS4 in November, but it’s been known for a while that like Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games has multiples development teams at their studios in Amsterdam. Guerrilla even confirmed that they were working on a new project following the launch of the PS4 in Japan, via a video from PlayStation Japan’s YouTube channel, and that it has been in development for over two years.

According to another industry ‘insider,’ picked up by Gamepur, Guerrilla is set to unveil that new IP at E3 this year. The insider, who goes by Tidux on Twitter, didn’t have much to say, other than that the game is running at 1080p on PS4. Pretty vague as far as rumors go, but if the title really has been in the works for two years or more, it’s quite possible that we’ll be seeing something in the near future; if not at E3, then perhaps at Gamescom in Germany, near the company’s home territory.

Trademarks Filed for SCEA Could Be New First-Party Games

Our final rumor reports come via the US Patent and Trademarks Office–again via NeoGAF, among other places–and could point to a bevy of new unannounced IP coming to PlayStation consoles. The first two trademarks, for the words “Entwined” and “KILL STRAIN,” are described in the patent applications as “Computer game software; Downloadable computer game software via a global computer network and wireless devices; Video game software” and were filed on April 14 and April 15 of this year, respectively. The third, “Bloodborne,” was found by Siliconera, is also described as “Computer game software; Downloadable computer game software via a global computer network  and wireless devices; Video game software,” filed on April 24. The fourth, and most amusingly titled, is called “Guns Up!” and was spotted by another NeoGAF user.

It’s possible that one, or more, of these titles could relate to the previous Guerrilla Games IP. It’s possible that they are not final product titles at all, but related to games that are already in development. For now, they’re a mystery that will wait to be revealed. But it’s worth noting that this wouldn’t be the first time that a game title has been revealed through trademark filings; Ready At Dawn’s upcoming alternate history action game The Order: 1886 was uncovered in April of last year as well, two months before it was officially unveiled at E3.

Which rumors do you think are plausible? Will we see From Software bring a game exclusively to PS4? Will Guerrilla Games finally show off their first non-Killzone game in nearly a decade? Do these trademark applications sound promising? Let us know in the comments!
