Last December at Spike’s VGX program, the re-named Video Game Awards show, a trailer and developer came out of left field to surprise both industry insiders and fans alike. Hello Games, makes of the Joe Danger series, debuted the first look at their new title called No Man’s Sky. The UK-based team, made up of just four individuals, stunned Twitter with a beautiful and ambitious exploration game that seemed destined for high-end PCs and new consoles, with procedurally-generated planets to explore, creatures to discover, and the vast emptiness of space to navigate between each.

Then, something unfortunate happened. On Christmas Eve, the offices of Hello Games flooded. News of the incident hit Twitter and the gaming press, and there was fear that the wondrous new game wouldn’t see the light of day.

Fast forward to June 9, “Day 0” of E3, and the day of the media briefings by major publishers and console makers. In the past, not typically a place for a game developed by four people, but now a launch pad for the biggest names in indie development thanks to major pushes by Sony and Microsoft with their next-generation hardware launches. It was on stage at Sony’s press event that the world had their eyes opened a second time to the marvel of No Man’s Sky.

No Man’s Sky will be coming to the PlayStation 4 ahead of any other platform. The team calls it a science fiction game, focused on exploration rather than gritty combat, inspired by the worlds created in the works of Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, and others. Right now, there is no release date scheduled, but be sure to check back with SonyRumors in the future for updates on this fascinating title. Until then, be sure to check out the PlayStation Blog team’s Livecast interview with Sean Murray from Hello Games:
