‘Breaking Bad’ Now Available on Netflix 4K

Breaking_Bad_Pixel_4KWhile there is no shortage of Breaking Bad fans out there, the number shrinks down when the news applies to Breaking Bad fans who also own a 4K television. If you do fall into that elite group then this news should excite you though in general, this is good news for 4K fans as well. As of now, you can watch Breaking Bad in drool-worthy 4K. All you need now is smell-o-vision to have the most authentic meth lab experience without actually going to jail. The news was brought to light by Netflix’s Joris Evers:

Unfortunately, there are some caveats that go along with the news.

While Breaking Bad will be available in 4K via the free Netflix app, not all 4K televisions support the new service, despite being 4K. Those looking to purchase or have already purchased a 2014 Sony 4K XBR should fear not as the entire line is compatible with the new Netflix 4K app. This means those with earlier 4K televisions are left out in the cold, due to the lack of HEVC/H.265 codec support which the Netflix 4K app is built on. This doesn’t mean that owners of older 4K models are completely out of luck as it’s expected that future streaming boxes like the Roku and Sony Media Player to support the new codec which in turn would allow them to run Netflix in 4K.

It’s worth noting that neither Sony or Roku has directly commented on their next generation efforts and that they’re used as a general example of companies who produce such devices.

In addition to Breaking Bad, Netflix is also streaming House of Cards in 4K.
