Sony to Create Its Own PlayStation eSports League

Official_PlayStation_eSports_League_1 Chalk this up to something I didn’t see coming. Today in Spain, Sony officially unveiled the ‘Liga Oficial PlayStation’ which is expected to kick off on October 16th. As the name suggests, Sony is officially creating its own eSport league to take on other major players, mostly notably the MLG which has traditionally focused on PC and Xbox gamers and games. Soon after, Sony will expand the league to Portugal and Italy before coming to the rest of Europe.

After the jump, some more details on ‘Liga Oficial PlayStation’ from Sony.

While Sony has yet to address the matter in any official capacity to Western gamers, based on how the league does in Europe, don’t be surprised to see it expand to the US sometime next year. Prior to this, Sony had setup something similar for the PS Vita in Japan. It’s been revealed that the league will be free to PlayStation Plus users and that your identity will be linked to your PSN account while match making will be based on your play history. That means the next time you jump in on Battlefield or Destiny, make sure that you log out of multiplayer when you’re taking a break so your respawning corpses doesn’t ruin your chance at the leaderboard or placement.

Speaking of games, it’s believed that the league will kick off with Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts,  and Fifa 15. Other games that will likely make the cut in the future include NBA2k15, and DriveClub. No word yet on Destiny but I’d be surprised to see the massively popular game not be part of the leagues lineup at some point. Sony is looking to award both individuals and team members with prizes that will include games, and accessories. No word yet on if there will be any cash incentive like other leagues.

Seeing how Sony was fully on board with Twitch.TV and Ustream on PS4 from launch, this move only makes sense as Sony looks to further expand the scope of PS4 and its social capabilities.
