Sony Thinks Its Best You Don’t Upgrade Your VAIO to Windows 10

Think Sony is done with VAIO and that it’s dead? Well, as it turns out, no to the first part and yes to the second part – but let’s start from the beginning. Sony shuttered VAIO, their PC division in February 2014, only to have the company be reborn again in August of that year. However, that VAIO is an independently-run company with reach only in Japan. The news about VAIO today has nothing to do with that VAIO and everything to do with the VAIO of Sony which is still legally responsible for the models it sold.

As it turns out, if you own a Sony VAIO, you may want to hold off on upgrading to Windows 10. Details after the jump.

According to Sony support, it’s best to hold off on upgrading to Windows 10 until Sony has all the drivers necessary to get their hardware working with the new OS.

 DO NOT UPGRADE YET.

To ensure your VAIO PC works with Windows 10, it is strongly recommended that you wait to upgrade your PC until the drivers are ready.

And wait you shall have to, as it could be anywhere from October to November before drivers are ready for your unit, and that’s if they shipped with some variant of Windows 8. Specifically

We are testing supported models and will be providing the results as quickly as possible. We plan to release Windows 10 upgrade information and, for Windows 8 and 8.1 models, drivers, applications and detailed information on the schedule below based on the operating system originally installed on the PC.

  • Windows 8.1 Preinstalled – October 2015 Driver Release
  • Windows 8 Preinstalled – November 2015 Driver Release

Even worse is for those who purchased a VAIO with Windows 7 as Sony is only promising information sometime this month and it’s unclear when or if there will ever be a easy path to Windows 10. If there is one, don’t expect it till late 2015 though early 2016 seems more likely.

None of this means that Windows 7 and Windows 8 users on VAIO computers can’t upgrade to Windows 10 today. However, depending on the hardware in your machine, certain features may not be supported or even work and Sony will not be able to help you. Basically, do it at your own risk.
