Sony RX1R II Release Halted, Autofocus Issues the Culprit?

Sony RX1R II Hero_3

It’s looking like Christmas might come a bit late for those who were hoping for a Sony RX1R II.

I got word from US and other Asian stores that also they will have to wait to get a new Stock of RX1rII cameras. The reason for the stop is unknown. And Sony also does not tell when they will resume sales.

UPDATE: An anonymous source (thanks!) told me: The production of the RX1R2 is halted because of AF inconsistencies

US stores also do not show the RX1RII in Stock anymore

Let’s talk after the jump.

The more I look into the story, the more it seems to pan out that there is some sort of issue that Sony is looking to address and that they have indeed pulled the camera from retail. Luckily, the camera has just recently launched so it’s not likely that many are into the wild and being used. It’s also unclear if Autofocus is the culprit, but it makes sense.

Cameras are complicated (especially a unit like the RX1R II) and in the grand scheme, this isn’t a huge deal. It is in fact good for Sony for catching the issue early and pulling the camera as this is more of a sign of something wrong with manufacturing the camera lens or the plant that they were produced at than a sign of something wrong with the camera design which is a far larger ordeal.

Discuss:

Are you getting a new camera this Christmas?
