‘Gran Turismo Sport’ Trailer Fails to Thrill

Gran_Turismo_Sport_DriverGran Turismo games have always been one of the staples of PlayStation in graphics and gameplay. Having been on the system since PSone, Gran Turismo, developed by Polyphony Digital, is one of those rare franchises that cannot be simply recreated despite the best effort of other studios. From the depth of tracks and cars to the smallest of details when tuning your car, Gran Turismo, especially with a proper seat and steering wheel, is likely the closest most of us will ever get to taking an exotic (or Mazda Miata) on the race tracks.

Apparently announced during Paris Game Week (which I completely missed since I was too busy getting married), Gran Turismo Sport is the latest iteration of the franchise that will arrive on PS4 sometime in 2016. Sadly, from what should have been an easy trailer to nail, we’re left with an awkward piece that fails to thrill and opts to show us a parked Mazda Miata and its interior.

More, including the trailer after the jump.

I don’t know about you but the trailer starts off pretty strong, eliciting an emotional response from car enthusiasts by laying out the last 100 years of motorsport. As the song builds up, we get to the point where the beat usually drops and we continue to see action shots (in this case racing scenes etc.) that should further excite us about the game and show off the series for the first time on PS4.

Instead, we’re left with weird things like

  • 7 to 77 from children to adults anybody can participate
  • Interior shots of a parked Mazda Miata
  • Represent your country
  • Drive the future of motorsports for the next 100 years

Did I miss something? Here is a similar game (DriveClub) doing trailers right by showing off the game, graphics, and game modes.

Sony has always had a weird track record with trailers and ads. This debut piece for Gran Turismo Sport surely chalks up under a miss as they’ve somehow managed to turn one of their elite franchises that’s all about speed into a bore fest. For a company that’s been criticized for a lack of first party titles in 2015, they need to do a much better job at exciting their fanbase and this isn’t it. Come on, Sony!

Were you as bored with the Gran Turismo Sport trailer as I was?
