FCC Points to New PS4 “Wireless Adapter” Around the Bend

Oh FCC, how you leak Sony products like no other. Interestingly enough, we never get leaks for Apple products, be it the next MacBook or wireless keyboard so I’m not sure why Sony has so much trouble. Either way, according to the FCC, Sony Interactive Entertainment has requested certifications for a wireless adaptor – code CUH-ZWA1U.

A lot of speculation has gone into what the adaptor could be. I’ll tell you without a shadow of a doubt what it’s not. It’s not a Wi-Fi card to bring expanded 5Ghz support to PS4. It’s also not an internal Bluetooth module, seeing how the PS4 already has built-in Bluetooth and adapting to the newer Bluetooth standard would give the PS4 little new functionality that could entice consumers enough to purchase an accessory for it.

So what is the wireless adaptor for? From what a little birdie has told me, it’s related to a headset. They wouldn’t confirm if this means a new headset like the PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset or if its purely related to PlayStation VR. However seeing how PS VR is not wireless and must be plugged into PS4, I’m currently leaning towards the former of the two.

Either way, Sony should be making some hardware announcements in the next few months so we’ll likely find out soon enough.
