Why You’ll Need a Premium HDMI Cable for PS4 Pro

PS4 Pro is going to offer plenty of benefits for HDTV owners like all games running at 1080p and improved framerates. That means that if you’ve got an HDTV, all you need to do is plug in PS4 Pro and use any HDMI cable you have laying around and you’ll immediately get the added benefits. Now if you have a 4K TV, the PS4 Pro can offer a whole lot more but you’ll need a premium HDMI cable.

The first thing we should get out of the way is that PS4 Pro will come with a premium HDMI cable so if it’s sitting next to your TV, you’re likely all set and none of this matters. However, Sony does ‘warn’ that if your console happens to sit a bit further away from your TV, that their provided cable (likely 6ft) won’t be enough and if you get a normal HDMI cable (aka HDMI 1.4), that it won’t be able to drive all the extra power.

The newer Premium HDMI format can display a 4K signal at up to 60 frames per second (60Hz). Older High Speed HDMI cables (aka HDMI 1.4) can technically display a 4K signal on a 4K TV, but the performance will be limited to just 30 frames per second (30Hz).

And that’s the thing – improved framerates is something we can all notice and capping things at 30fps would be a shame if you own a nice 4K TV and the PS4 Pro. So in short, do yourself a favor and if you need a longer HDMI cable, don’t just reach for the cheapest cable you find because you’ll be losing out on some of the benefits offered by PS4 Pro.

PS4 Pro is now available for pre-order with units shipping November 10th in North America.
