Sony Updates Vaio Y and S Series, AMD Fusion and Intel Inside

When it comes to articles, I have to say that as much of a computer geek that I am, with 4 computers in my room alone, I hate writing about laptops. There is too many series with different processors and specs to try to make a smooth and cohesive sounding sentence without it just being a list of specs but I’ll give it a shot! During CES, though Sony had many new updates to its current Vaio lineup with the usual slight spec bumps, the main story was the Vaio Y and S series laptops, with the former packing in the newly announced AMD Fusion APU.

We Get Hands On with Sony’s New VAIO L Series Touch HD PC/TV all-in-one, Contains Some Minority-Report-Like Technology

In a world where desktop sales have long been on a nose dive and plenty of other and cheaper all-in-one desktops on the market, is there anything Sony can do to change up their machine and stand out from the crowd, without just shoving more power in it? After playing around with the new VAIO L Series Touch HD, it seems like there is. At a first glance, the new 24 inch VAIO L looks to be just the next evolution of the all-in-one series from Sony. It packs what you would expect from a Sony machine that starts at $1,200 with HDMI in and out, built in TV tuner, DVR and Blu-ray player and burner for the media fans. For those who want more power out of their machine, you can also custom configure it with a Intel i7 processor. NVIDIA’s latest GeForce GT500M graphics, Dolby Home Theater speakers and a wireless keyboard and mouse all come standard of course. So how does this differentiate from the previous generation? With touch of course, but without the need to actually touch the screen.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Announced; We Have Specs

Though not the PlayStation Phone, Sony Ericsson did have a new phone to show off during CES, the Xperia Arc. This 4.2-inch phone packs some of the latest from both Sony and Google by being one of the thinnest Android phones out there with a thickness just under 8.7mm and running Android 2.3 as the OS backbone. With the latest OS comes great power and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor should please the multitasker and ADHD kid inside of you, while the phones 8.3 mexapixel Sony Exmor R camera with LED flash should give the photo camps something to smile about also. Other little tidbits about the phone include a 802.11n wireless card and HDMI out. Another first for Sony is the collaboration between the Sony Ericcsson and Bravia division to produce what Sony calls “Reality Display” with a Mobile BRAVIA Engine. This new screen is meant to fight off the Super AMOLED display from Samsung and the Retina Display from Apple with Bravia engineers optimizing the engine, insuring optimal brightness and color with special focus on deep blacks when it comes to video and game playback. As I mentioned, this also marks a first for Sony as two completely separate divisions are collaborating on a singular device to draw from the strength of Ericssons phone design and the Bravia teams know how of displays. Hopefully we will continue to see further collaboration between Sony’s many different devisions as they have a vast array of products and offerings that can complement and build off of each other, while helping to reduce cost and the need to go to 3rd party venders for parts and licensing. Once released, the phone will be available in two colors, Midnight Blue and Misty Silver.

More PlayStation Phone Images Appear

The Chinese website, TGbus, has published a preview of Sony’s – still officially unannounced – PlayStation phone. It features a plethora of images, comparing it with other popular devices. Engadget’s translator, Richard Lai, interpreted the article, highlighting the statement that, ‘…a third-party emulator was downloaded and tested, with 70 percent success.’ The emulator being referred to is unknown at the moment.

The consistent inability to prevent information from being revealed must not have a considerable impact on sales and proficiency in making a profit, because if it did, Sony would be history. In other words, it’s difficult to keep secrets when information now naturally flows so freely. I for one am glad that Sony is doing okay despite its marked information security deficiency.

Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone to be called Xperia Play?

As we get closer and closer to the inevitable launch of the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone, there still remains plenty of unanswered questions. Let’s forget that we still don’t know how the device will function, let alone the exact specs and offerings of the system, even after all the leaks we have had. But could we at least finally find out the device’s name? If a recent Sony Ericsson EU trademark registration is to be believed, Xperia Play will be the name. Not only does a trademark for Xperia Play now exist, but Xperia Play.com, .net and .org have been snatched up by Sony Ericsson PR firm Jung Relations as well. But that’s not all, other new trademark fillings include Xperia Arc, Xperia Duo, and Xperia Neo. This of course does not mean there will be multiple PlayStation Phones coming, but it does indeed indicate that there is more than likely a slew of new handsets to be released from Sony Ericsson during 2011.

Next Generation of Sony Xperia X10 Mini Pro Leaked?

When it comes to keep things under wrap, Sony Ericsson might as well use one of Apple’s flagship glass stores so everybody can watch and at least get the proper info. Another leak from China points towards the next generation Sony Xperia X10 Mini Pro (Never a mouthful when it comes to Sony and their product names). This Android 2.3 machine is set to sport a

  • 3-inch 320 x 480 multitouch LCD screen
  • 1GHz chip processor with an Adreno 205 GPU

Though not much is known about this product, I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before we find out more. One last little interesting tidbit; when looking at the Neocore (42.5fps) and Quadrant (1,533) benchmarks of the Xperia X10 Mini Pro compared to previous Android handsets, it looks like Sony Ericsson has created quite the powerful little monster.

Sony Making a Vaio Tablet After All?

Just last week, we ran a story about how Sony didn’t want to create a tablet, stating that they didn’t want to be the “24th tablet maker out there”. Considering that tablet is the new thing in the tech industry and with the sales of the iPad, it’s no surprise that everybody wants a piece of the action but we were glad that Sony was going to stay out of it for the time being. Well, could that have just been a smoke screen? Because according to the FCC filing just made today by a VAIO Business Group representative, Sony is looking to bring a few tablets into the market with, the PCG-31211L, PCG-31311L, PCG-312xxL. The only information we know is that these units will be WiFi-only with 802.11b/g plus single band n. There is no further picture of the device, though January 20th is when the rest of the information will be published on the FCC website, indicating a CES 2011 reveal.

Xperia X10 Will Get Pinch-to-zoom in Q1 2011

Sony has made it clear that for the time being, the Xperia X10 is their flagship device, and they have shown that by recently giving the device an OS update, bringing it to Android 2.1. But if you thought Sony was done with it, think again. Both the developer community and those who want to modify their Android device beyond what the manufacturer has given them have been very vocal about the fact that the Xperia X10 can handle multi-touch. Sony on the other hand has gone on record a few times and said that the device indeed cannot handle it and that the touch screen and hardware never had multi-touch in mind. Who is right? As it turns out, both companies.

Sony Frustrated with Slow Xperia Android 2.1 Rollout Too

I’ve made it known that Sony has been extremely slow at rolling out Android 2.1 for the Xperia X10 and its little brother, Xperia X8, being months behind other handset manufacturers. Well guess what, Sony is frustrated with the process as well. On their Facebook page, the company points towards AT&T, stating that “the technical requirements that must be met” over which Sony Ericsson has “no control” are far more rigorous than elsewhere. Sony goes on to say that it takes months for these updates to get approved, indicating that they have had Android 2.1 in the pipeline for some time and we can only assume that Android 2.3 is sitting in the pipes as well. Of course, Sony is not the only manufacturer of Android, but is one of the few which relies on AT&T to provides the platform. They can have different requirements than Verizon which is the big Android carrier. Part of this is also tied down to the fact that AT&T networks handle both Voice and Data at the same time while Verizon does not, which points to additional tweaks and checks required from AT&T to make sure all is running adequately. Don't Expect a Tablet from Sony Anytime Soon, Thank God

While Sony Ericsson France CEO Pierre Perron was in talks about Sony Ericsson’s stand on Windows Phone 7 with French newspaper Les Echos, he briefly touched on the subject of tablet computers and Sony’s stance on the subject matter. Many had assumed that with Sony’s many new partnerships with Google and the tablet fever that most companies have, an Android-based tablet from Sony was in the cards for the near future. “Not so fast,” said Perron, stating that they don’t want to be the “24th” tablet maker out there. I can’t believe that some of the best Sony news of this month isn’t what Sony is making, but instead what Sony isn’t. I don’t say this with a sinister tone, but the opposite. One mark of a good company is not what they make, but what they choose not to make. Apple can make cameras and digital frame, with the iPhone 4’s exceptional camera and display but Apple dosen’t want to compete in those markets. Sony usually has trouble with this concept, instead attempting to compete in every market it can, and a lot of the time this ends up with lackluster results because they can’t be nimble enough compared to the likes of a company that is just dedicated to that sector. This can be especially true in the tablet market where Apple is heavily leveraging their now extremely mature iTunes platform and App store, married with their software heritage to gives users a through-and-through experience. Companies much larger than Sony (HP) tried to take on the iPad by offering 2GB of ram versus the iPad 256mb and USB ports and dual camera’s and the list goes, but they still managed to sell only 9,000 on launch while Apple is expected to finish 2010 with 10 million units sold, with nearly 700,000 sold on launch date alone. I don’t doubt that eventually, Sony will make a tablet, because that is after all where computing is headed, but I don’t believe right now is the time. Sony instead needs to take its time and build up its cloud services like the PlayStation Network and Qriocity and then leverage those to lure people into their product.

Windows Phone 7 From Sony Ericsson? Not Likely Says CEO

Although Sony Ericsson isn’t yet a standard name for those outside of the tech world in the US, with the likes of Apple’s iPhone and Motorola’s Android dominating the news, Sony has still made big strides. The once-sinking division of Sony has now made profit for three consecutive quarters and all of this was really prior to their big Android push with the Xperia X10 and X8 models. So it would only make sense for them to expand into new platforms like Windows Phone 7, right? “Not so fast,” says Sony Ericsson France CEO Pierre Perron. During a recent interview with French newspaper Les Echos, Perron did confirm earlier rumors that Sony had indeed been in talks with Microsoft, but decided against the idea because it would “run the risk of standardizing our smartphones,” adding that (roughly translated), “we would be obliged to fight only on design and price, which we want to avoid.” Although this might be sad news for a Windows Phone 7 fan, the strategy makes sense and I’m not even touching on the so-called “standardizing” effect that Perron noted. Instead, if we look back at Sony’s history, the company has a tendency to stretch itself too thin, offering a barrage of products at every price point and every taste and thus not being able to adjust and adapt to new trends fast. Instead, if Sony takes the Apple approach and focuses on fewer products, yet more solid build and software, they can stand to achieve a much bigger flowing and thus sales which is what it’s all about at the end of the day.

Sony Xperia X8 Starts to Get Android 2.1

Sony’s recently-launched Xperia X8 is finally setting into 2010 as well with an over-the-air update to Android 2.1 which is set to give the device features including 720p recording, integrated social networking, and five customizable home pages. The one catch is that not all Xperia X8 units are gaining this functionality immediately. Instead, Sony is using their eight-digit “SI-number” (e.g. 1242-4859) to determine when the update gets pushed out. Hit the jump at the bottom to see if you qualify yet for the Android 2.1 update.
