Playstation Store Update (02-28-12)

Now that the Oscars are over, the biggest awards left to give out are the 2012 Gamer’s Choice Awards, which have taken over this week’s Playstation Store update. But beyond the nominees, this week’s update is full of quality releases, demos, and extras.

First and foremost this week, the multiplayer component of Killzone 3 is now available as a full, stand alone download. The game is available for free with a level cap or you can access the complete version for fifteen dollars ($7.50 for Playstation Plus subscribers). Other prominent releases this week include Storm, an elemental manipulation puzzle game from developer IndiePub, and a full download of last fall’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Playstation Plus members this week get half off on Killzone 3 multiplayer and 20% off on Touchdown Fever Mini, as well as the 13 free games previously available.

Sega Teases Return of Jet Grind Radio; Heading to PSN

After ten years since its last console release, one of the most beloved and funkiest franchises is set to make a return. Sega recently released a short teaser for what is looking like a PSN rerelease of 2000’s Dreamcast title Jet Grind Radio. The 22-second teaser features music from the original game, the logo, and that a new Dreamcast game is coming to Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, though the short video never outright mentions the title.

Not much is known about this downloadable rerelease, like whether or not the graphics are going to be enhanced or whether the licensed music that was so popular in the original is going to remain the same.

The last console release for the franchise was in 2002, when sequel Jet Set Radio Future came out for the original Xbox. Jet Grind Radio will be joining Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi as Dreamcast titles available on the Playstation Store.

Playstation Store Update (02-21-12)

Amidst the big launch of the Playstation Vita this week, Sony dropped a huge update on the North American Playstation Store. As expected, the Playstation Store is filled to the brim with whole game downloads like Touch My Katamari, Plants Vs Zombies, and the critically-acclaimed TALES FROM SPACE: MUTANT BLOBS ATTACK, as well as a ton of augmented reality games like Table Soccer and Fireworks.  Also available for the Vita are apps for Twitter, Flickr, and Netflix.

On the Playstation 3 side of things, Playstation Plus members are treated to free downloads of some Sega classics, including Sonic The Hedgehog, Comix Zone, and Altered Beast. The star of the downloadable demos this week is definitely SSX, which according to the Playstation Blog, will be the definitive version of the game, as the PS3 version will have Mt. Fuji as an in-game exclusive. Also, after a little bit of initial difficulty, the Uncharted 3 Flashback Map Pack #2 is finally available for download as well.

Choplifter HD Coming To The PSN Tomorrow

One of my favorite classic games on my Atari, Choplifter, finally gets its long-overdue sequel tomorrow. According to Sony and inXile Entertainment, the Unreal Engine-powered Choplifter HD will be released for download on the PSN tomorrow, January 10, 2012.

Choplifter casts players as an ace pilot as he is put into different missions where he must use his chopper to pick up injured soldiers, freed prisoners with the Blackhawk chopper. From time to time, he’ll have to bring the hurt to the enemy using  fearsome attack choppers.

While the original game was more of a defensive game, Choplifter HD gives players a large variety of firepower to help with their missions. Players will go on over 30+ varied missions that have them going on rescue and attack missions all over the world. There are even zombie missions that have players saving people from becoming an undead delicacy.

If that wasn’t enough, players should also prepare to see characters from other games as they make special cameos in Choplifter HD; one of the biggest and baddest being the tough-as-nails Duke Nukem. inXile Entertainment has also said that they have plans to release free DLC with lots more zombies, choppers, and characters soon.

I had a chance to play Choplifter HD late in 2011 and was able to talk with the game’s developers. It looks like their vision of bringing the favorite’s classic gameplay into the HD-generation is going to be an awesome ride.

Check out our interview with game developers inXile Entertainment about Choplifter HD here.

Choplifter HD will go on sale this January 10th for $15 on the PlayStation Network.

SEGA’s House of the Dead 3 And 4 PSN-Bound

Earlier this week, SEGA announced that they will be releasing HD-editions of House of the Dead 3 and 4 on the PlayStation Network later this year. It seems the company’s re-release of House of the Dead: Overkill met with success; enough to warrant bringing the two other games in the franchise to the PSN.

Of course, in addition to HD graphics both House of the Dead games will come with complete trophy and PlayStation Move support. This will be the first time both games will ever be released on a Sony game console. House of the Dead 3 was first released in 2002 in the arcades, later ported to the original Xbox, Windows, and finally the Nintendo Wii in 2008. House of the Dead 4; released in 2005, has never seen a console release until now.

I’ve actually been waiting for both of these games to hit the PS3 as light-gun games work perfectly with my recently purchased PlayStation Move Sharpshooter. No better feeling than blasting zombies with un-deadly firepower right?

House of the Dead 3 is coming to the PSN on February 7, 2012 while House of the Dead 4 releasing later in the spring.

PlayStation Plus Members Get Tomb Raider: Underworld, Marvel Pinball, and More for Free

Sony and the team at PlayStation are giving PlayStation Plus members an extra reason to smile this holiday season with a few free games and some big savings. To kick things off, starting on Tuesday, December 5th, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Marvel Pinball and Spyro: Year of the Dragon will be offered all month long for free. Spyro fans will note that Year of the Dragon is the 3rd in the series that premiered on the PlayStation and that Sony had previously offered the previous two titles for PlayStation Plus members for free. Now, Sony is also bringing back the first two entries in the series, again for free for PlayStation Plus members, giving you all three PSone classics. If that’s not enough free content, your PSP, PS Vita and PS3 will also get Orbit, a new mini game for free as well.

If that still doesn’t bring a smile on your face, Sony is also giving you deeper discounts on the Holiday Collection sale. Titles include games like Sonic Adventures (Game + Add-On) – 30% off, Assassins Creed Brotherhood Bundle – 30% off and LA NOIRE Bundle/Complete Edition – 30% off to name a few. After the jump, the full list of games and their savings.

Crackle Movies Available In PlayStation Home

In case you didn’t know, Crackle is a digital media network that streams full movies and shows (ad-supported) in flash format on the web. PlayStation 3 owners who have used the PS3 web browser in the past may have had experiences watching full movies on the browser through Crackle.

Now it seems, PlayStation Home users can now add FREE full film viewings to their “to-do lists” as Sony announced that Crackle is indeed coming to PlayStation Home. Players and their friends on PS Home can watch literally hundreds of full shows and movies in the LOOT EOD screens found in the LOOT EOD Ttheatres which include the Sunset Yacht and Hollywood Hills House home spaces.

Some of the better films found in Crackle (Canadian Version) are:

  • 88 Minutes
  • Arlington Road
  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
  • Drunken Master
  • Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
  • High School High
  • Quarantine
  • Resident Evil: Degeneration
  • Revolver

Given that the Canadian version is severely lacking in titles, American PS Home viewers will find a better and bigger selection of movies on their version of Crackle. Lucky!
