PSA: PlayStation Network is Down For Maintenance (updated)

Now don’t you go freaking out that because you can’t access the PlayStation Network. PSN will be down till approximately 10pm PST, during which the following services will affected:

  • PlayStation Store on PS3 and PSP.
  • PlayStation Network Account Management.
  • PlayStation Network Account Registration.
Most users will still be able to play online games, update their profile and earn game trophies. However, seeing how today marks the PlayStation 3’s fifth anniversary in the US of A, it seems like an odd time to complete maintenance, right Sony? Maybe you should’ve taken PSN down either yesterday or tomorrow. Just saying.

Updated:
Services have now been fully restored.

Fight Night: Champion – First Customizable Game Experiment On PSN

EA Games recently released one of the most interesting game download experiments on PSN. During yesterday’s PSN update, EA Games added Fight Night: Champion Customizable for a low price of $4.99.

Wait? Didn’t Fight Night: Champion just come out? How could it be 5 bucks already? Is it DLC?

Basically, players who purchase Fight Night: Champion Customizable will get the game’s Champion mode. Champion Mode is the very first story-based campaign mode featured in a combat sport game. According to EA Games,

“Inspired by classic boxing movies, Champion Mode allows players to step into the shoes of Andre Bishop, an up-and-coming middleweight contender who learns that the road to becoming a champion in professional boxing is one that is filled with unimaginable highs and brutal lows. Champion Mode tells a story of redemption and perseverance in one of the toughest sports ever imagined.”

Keep in mind when purchasing Fight Night: Champion Customizable that it does not include the Fight Now, Legacy, and Online Play Modes. However, players who find that they liked Champion mode can customize their game experience by going into the in-game store and purchasing the other modes for a certain price.

EA Games says that it’s all about giving players a choice. Some players only prefer to try out the campaign and not even try the online mode. So the company decided to offer the game purchasable a la carte. Players need only purchase game modes that they will play.

A bold downloadable game experiment by EA Games. Will it pay off? Let’s tune in to find out.

PlayStation Store Update (11-1-11)

The first day of November is here and it has happened to land on a Tuesday, which means that the PlayStation Store has once again been updated. However, unlike other days, today is special, and not just because of the 11-1-11 pattern. Instead, today is the day many gamers have been waiting for; the day Uncharted 3, the third installation from Naughty Dog, is released and has us reuniting with Nathan Drake, Sully, and Elena once more. So I would say while there is tons of great content to be found today like Qore Episode 42, Batman Arkham City – Nightwing Bundle, and Mortal Kombat Vs Dc Universe Digital for only $19.99, I would instead hold off on all of that for another day and head to your nearest gaming outlet to purchase Uncharted 3.

After the jump, the full PlayStation Store update awaits you.

Amazon Removes All PSN Content

There isn’t much information to go by here and we’ve yet to hear back much from either Sony or Amazon, but we can confirm that Amazon has removed the PlayStation Store from their website. Previously, PlayStation owners were able to purchase content found on the PSN (PlayStation Network) like game DLC and downloadable titles. The only comment so far has come from Amazon, who not surprisingly didn’t have much to say.

“We have no announcements regarding this change in selection.”

We’ll have more for you on this matter as it develops. The following is all that exists from the once lively store.

PlayStation Store Lands on Sony Tablet S. Game List and Prices Announced

Sony has long recognized that in order for the PlayStation brand to expand, they would need to reach outside of the traditional PlayStation family, which currently includes the PlayStation 3, PSP, and will expand with the PS Vita in February 2012. The Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY is currently the only PlayStation Certified Android smartphone with PlayStation games available for it, though it still has no access to the PlayStation Store. The Sony Tablet S, however, is not only the first PlayStation Certified tablet, but is also the first to receive the PlayStation Store.

The PlayStation Store launches today on the Sony Tablet S in nine countries, including the US and Canada. 10 PlayStation One titles will kick off this event with Sony planning on adding more as time goes on. There have even been rumors of PlayStation 2 titles eventually making their way onto the store though I wouldn’t hold my breath on that. Each PS One title will cost $5.99, the list of which includes:

  • Cool Boarders
  • Destruction Derby
  • Hot Shots Golf 2
  • Jet Moto
  • Jet Moto 2
  • Jumping Flash!
  • MediEvil
  • Motor Toon Grand Prix
  • Rally Cross
  • Wild Arms

Installing the PS Store is easy. Sony Tablet S owners will receive a notification letting you know that the PS Store has opened and is available for download. From there, simply follow the on-screen directions to download the PS Store App and start downloading games for the Sony Tablet S.

Sony has always insisted that the PlayStation Store experience will not be limited to their smartphones and tablets and that other manufacturers are able to get in on the action as well. This entire initiative is based around expanding Sony’s reach with the PlayStation brand in hopes of drawing people back into their main devices like the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita while also setting their devices apart.

Sony Detects And Deals With Small PSN Breach

According to a blog post by Philip Reitinger, Chief Information Security Officer for Sony, the company detected an entity attempting to match a number of compromised user accounts and passwords taken from a different source.

“PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment (Networks) services to test a massive set of sign-in IDs and passwords against our network database. These attempts appear to include a large amount of data obtained from one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or other sources. In this case, given that the data tested against our network consisted of sign-in ID-password pairs, and that the overwhelming majority of the pairs resulted in failed matching attempts, it is likely the data came from another source and not from our Networks. We have taken steps to mitigate the activity.”

Reitinger has said that about 0.1% of PSN, SEN and SOE users have been affected by this attack (roughly 93,000 accounts globally), in which their sign-in information (PSN ID and password) were successfully matched by the attacker.

Sony has said that they have detected and dealt with the attack and are reviewing the affected accounts for unauthorized access. On a good note, the company has also stated that any accounts that were attacked have been temporarily closed off; also, credit cards associated with the accounts have not been compromised.

“Please note, if you have a credit card associated with your account, your credit card number is not at risk. We will work with any users whom we confirm have had unauthorized purchases made to restore amounts in the PSN/SEN or SOE wallet.”

If you’re in the 93,000 people whose accounts were compromised, Sony is requiring secure password resets and will send you an email with the instructions on how to do it soon. For everyone else, let this be a reminder that you shouldn’t be using the same sign-in and passwords on multiple online services or sites. Since online fraud is a serious threat, it’s better to be safe and use different sign-in information whenever we can.

I Am Alive Coming To The PSN in 2011

Remember Ubisoft’s really cool, yet really abrupt game teaser from E3 2008? The one where a number of men fought for one bottle of water? The title was I Am Alive, a surivival game that disappeared into obscurity after its initial tease.

Well it looks like the game survived, and will be coming this winter to the PlayStation Network as a downloadable title. I Am Alive tells the story of a regular every-man who is caught in the middle of a catastrophic natural disaster.
