LG Loses Against Sony. PS3 Shipment Begin to Flow to Europe

Remember the earlier scare that Sony went through where all PS3 shipments were ordered to be halted into Europe, thanks to a Sony vs. LG patent war? Well after the initial judge ruled on LG’s favor, the over all ruling has now come in favor of Sony Electronics. The more then 300,00 PlayStation 3 units that are currently sitting at customs are set to start flowing to inventory channels. Considering how fast this was resolved, we doubt retailers saw much of a dip in their inventory as most companies have 2-3 weeks worth of supplies for any given product. The judge has also ordered LG to pay 130k ($181k) Euros to Sony for costs incurred during the hearing and an additional 200k ($278k) Euros for everyday that shipments of the PS3 are not returned to Sony.

We’ve Set Up a Japan Tsunami Relief Site (updated)

My heart really goes out to all of our friends and the people of Japan and though I might not be able to physically help the great people of that country, I thought to myself that I might be able to help them virtually. I’ve set up the following site:

2011 Japan Tsunami Relief

I encourage you and ask others to use this website and spread word about this site. The singular goal of this website is to create a destination where people can find information (i.e. Red Cross, People Finder, etc.) and post any information they want through us and report missing persons with contact information which we will post again on your behalf. If you would like to help out with this initiative, I’m extremely open to suggestions and any help and welcome them.

Updated:

We’ve just updated that post with a proper email and soon a news feed!

Sony Closes Japanese Factories Due to Tsunami and Earthquakes

First and foremost, before we get into any news, I want to extend deep and heartfelt love and support to the people of Japan and any others who might be affected by this recent and devastating tsunami and earthquake. Our very own editor, Allegra Wilson, resides in Honolulu, HI where they had a scare throughout the night, though luckily not much happened there. Sony of Japan has announced that due to the recent natural disasters and potential damages done, six of their Northern Japan plants that are in charge of the company’s Blu-ray discs, magnetic heads, and battery productions have closed down for the time being. Yasuhiro Okada, a spokesman at the Tokyo-based company said that,

the company was assessing the impact of power outages and damage to its facilities in the region

Sony Begins Another Restructuring with Kaz Hirai at the Helm

On April 1st of this year, Kaz Hirai will become the executive deputy president of Sony’s new consumer electronics division in a move to help further streamline Sony’s services and help keep the compony on the offensive against main rivals like Apple, Nintendo and Samsung. During much of the 2000’s, Sony with then and current CEO Sir Howard Stringer played catchup to rival companies, when Sony slowly making the shift from the traditional analog company that they were to a more digital based system. Mr. Stringer during this time helped streamline and slim down Sony by cutting many over lapping jobs and shut down factories and facilities that could be merged with other parts of the company.

“It’s a sign that Sony has exited the crisis mode that it’s been in since the Lehman shock. It can now move on from talk of restructuring to growth,” said Mitsushige Akino, chief fund manager at Ichiyoshi Investment Management Co Ltd.

Of course as noted, cutting costs is only part of the solution. Sony had to make sure that they were a digital company with modern offerings in order to compete and with Kaz Hirai at the helm, Sony hopes to do that. Part of this restructuring will be to create two divisions out of Sony. Mr. Hirai will lead one group which will account for 60% of Sony and include consumer products and services and accounting. The other 40% will be left to Hiroshi Yoshioka who be controlling the business to business areas such as semiconductors, batteries and other key components.

“In his current role, Mr. Hirai has successfully led the turnaround of the games business,” Sony said in a statement.

Those in the gaming community will know Hirai who has led the US PlayStation division in the past and helped the company unveil and launch products like the PS2, PSP, PS3 and most recently, the much anticipated NGP. Since then, Hirai has been promoted from the US PlayStation division to PlayStation worldwide, helping over see all aspects of the PlayStation family. Now Hirai will lead all of Sony’s consumer offerings in hopes that he will be able to offer the same turn around to the entire company, that the PlayStation division saw under his control.

“The board and I have talked about succession planning and this is the first step.We have not made a final decision,” Stringer told a news conference Thursday.

“This is an opportunity for the board to watch Hirai san and judge his performance. There may be other candidates, but he has a leadership position,” Stringer said.

Hirai is expected to take over the helm of Sony and become CEO in 2013 when Sir Howard Stringer looks to make an exit.

PS3 Firmware 3.6, Brings Cloud Storage, Online Game Saving

When the PSN (PlayStation Network) entered it’s usual scheduled maintenance time, no one would have guessed that Sony was taking down the service to beef up the PS3 offering for PlayStation Plus users and giving them one of the holly grail features that people have been wanting, saving games to the cloud.

When PS3 firmware 3.6 goes live tomorrow, PlayStation Plus users will be able to back up game save data to the cloud. This new feature not only will ensure that your files are saved off location, in case your hard drive were to go south, but users will be able to access these files from any other PS3, simply by logging into their PSN account.

The new online storage feature allows gamers to store up to 150MB of game save data and a maximum of 1000 data files per PSN account.

Saves games to the cloud will happen automatically for PlayStation Plus users and while most games current available will work with this online storage method, all future games are required to have cloud saving compatibility. I’ve been a long time PlayStation Plus users, having written a piece why I  believe every PlayStation 3 user should have PlayStation Plus. Now, I can finally get another PS3. I’ve long wanted a secondary PlayStation 3, leaving the current one in the living room while having a machine in the bedroom as well. But the idea that I cannot continue my career in Gran Turismo 5 or the levels I’ve completed in LittleBigPlanet 2 always held me back and copying saved files back and forth from each machine via a USB drive seemed too tedious and bound for disaster. With Cloud Storage, I’m well on my way towards ordering another PlayStation 3. Press release after the jump.

Sony to Release 4 New AV Receivers in Spring, Native 3D Support, Start at $230

Instead, take this Spring as a time to clean out your old AV equipment and upgrade to something with full 3D, iPhone and DLNA support with a reasonable starting price of $230. Our LittleBigPlanet 2: Collectors Edition is Here!

We’re a little late to Media Molecule master piece, LittleBigPlanet 2 but our lovely editor, Allegra Wilson was able to get her hands on a collectors edition and our team will soon be rocking it with Sackboy and Sackgirl. Released on January 18th of this year, this sequel has gone to receive critical praise like the original title. With an average score of 9.1 from the critics and 9.3 from users, this PlayStation Move enabled sequel is as refreshing as the first round with plenty of new tricks and features. Did we mention there is already over 2 million user generated levels, in addition to the 50+ game levels? Look for my dressed up as either Captain Jack Sparrow, Spider-man or Clu from Tron under Fusion_ID and Allegra as Miss Elizabeth Swan or the Human Torch under The_Prancer. Unfortunately, the Collectors Edition is extremely hard to find but the normal edition can be found on Amazon for $53.88.

Just In: Sony CycleEnergy Power Charger

When it comes to my computer setup, it seems that I have far too many accessories that all still require AA batteries. Between my Apple Bluetooth Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad, I seem to be running to Costco too often to buy one of those 36 Duracell battery packs. Take into account other stuff around the house like motion air fresheners, electric toothbrushes and remotes (though thank god for my Harmony 1000 which has replaced most of my remotes) and you can see why batteries are a high expense around here. Finally, I bit the bullet and today, UPS brought me my Sony CycleEnergy Power Charger. This little guy, priced at only $14 on Amazon, comes with the charger and four AA batteries. Using high capacity 2500 mAh batteries, they can take up to 300 charges before losing their charge level and will generally last 5x longer then alkaline batteries. For those who need AAA batteries, this charger set is capable of handling those as well with any given mixture of AA and AAA placed inside of it. With an automatic shut off feature built in that kills the flow of energy, once a battery has been fully charged, I cannot recommend these enough to those of you who still have plenty of battery powered devices.

Our Pitch To Sony-Owned Crackle.com

A while ago, our site had an opportunity to pitch a new idea to Crackle.com which is a video site owned by Sony. Think of Crackle as a mix of Hulu and College Humor with a dash of Funny or Die. Of course the one advantage the site has is that Sony owns it. This means that there are free streams of Sony movies offered on the website. I can’t say our pitch ever went far with Sony but we figured you would like to read about it.

 Project Crackle

There used to be a time where content was king. The companies knew that selling content was how they would make money and the consumer went with the flow. There was a theatrical release, followed a year later by a VHS/DVD release and eventually made its way to Pay Per View and then years later to a network for a Network Premier. This indeed was a simple setup and made the studios great cash and consumers were happy. Fast forward to today, the internet age. Consumers want things now and on different platforms. They don’t like to wait for the studio cycle and if the studio does not cater to them, they will look other places, legal or illegal. We are not here to argue the idea of torrenting because the truth is, it’s happening and the cat’s out of the bag. Instead, we need to focus on where do we go from here, not how do we go back 10 years.

Media again can be king, but in a different manner. One needs to leverage content like movies and shows in order to sell and make profit else place and Sony is in the perfect position for this. The genius of Apple and its iTunes is that Apple does not make money or if it does, it’s very little from it’s music sales but it’s now the biggest music store and because of the ease that it was offering to its customers, it was able to make the iPod king and bring in a high profit ratio on that product. Their goal is the same with video and they are leveraging the media for profits on the iPad, AppleTV and other devices.

Sony is in a very unique position because not only is it a consumer electronics company, but also in the professional field, it is a media company with Sony and Columbia Pictures, as well as Sony Television and Sony/BMG. With a service like Crackle, Sony can offer its users something that the likes of Apple or Microsoft cannot. With its media collection, Sony can upload its movies and shows like Spider-man and Seinfeld and give its 50+ million PSP and 35+ million PS3 users the capability to enjoy this content free though Crackle. That means, if somebody had to decide between a Xbox and a PS3, the Playstation becomes a higher value for them because of the media content behind it. This also means that Sony has gained direct profit and a new customer, even though the sale might not directly have come from the Media itself. With this media leverage, Sony is using what they have in house, to add greater value to other products that they already have. In addition to that, the more people are aware and happy with your products they further chance you have to win them as a customer because if I enjoy streaming The Karate Kid on my PSP, I might now want to go purchase the Blu-ray version for further viewing. This synergy of Media and Hardware is a unique position that only Sony has, if they choose to empower themselves with a service like Crackle.

From there on, as Google has clearly shown it, the amount of profits that exist within advertising are nearly endless. That means that Sony does not have to limit it’s media content on Crack with just it’s Sony PSP and PS3. Sony can also offer it’s video on other devices like the iPad and web based, but again make it’s returns via advertising. It is a mistake to attempt to charge for such a service because if I as a user need to pay for it, what is to stop me from going to iTunes or the Netflix or worse off for the studio, back to torrenting. Indeed the goal needs to be to give the consumer freedom and power so they come to your content via official channels, and make your profits via hardware and advertising.

Ultimately, this is only one of the avenues that Crackle offers. One would simply be living under a rock if they did not think that Social Media has taken over. People are more connected then ever via Facebook and games that can be played via the web like bejeweled or Farmville. But if you just look at the situation, you will note that Facebook and it’s many games are free. Why is the developer making a game and maintaining it for free? We again go to hardware vs media. The more user a site can have, the more they are exposed to your services. That means that they will see more of your adds, they will click more of your limit edition offers and they will be in your playground as opposed to others. But surely that cannot be the only way to make a profit off of a service like crackle and it’s not. When users spend that much time, you begin to know and learn about their wants and needs. What better market research then to be there, with the users and figure out the upcoming trend and direction. Another avenue that the creators of Farmville and other biggest app store game developers like ngmoco have taken is micro transactions. Offer your game for free but if they want that additional resource, level or weapon, they then can purchase it for a fee or spend 50 additional hours and be exposed to your ads for that period of time. Regardless of the outcome, they are your users now and are spending time with your content which is free. And the more open and social your website is, the more likely that it will draw people towards it’s content because we live in a age where people want to interact and connect with each other.

So in the end, content is indeed still king because what is an iPad with no apps and what is a Playstation with no games. It’s just that we need to look at our media consumption and change the way we leverage and use it. Sometimes, that means offering it for free, in order to make money off of it.

I would love to hear your comments on this pitch. Hit us up on here, Facebook or Twitter.

New DualShock 3 Docking Station from Sony

One thing I hate more then anything when it comes to my gear is cheap accessories. I didn’t shell out over $600 for a PlayStation 3 or over $900 for my iPad to turn around and buy a cheap dock, case or peripheral from companies who we won’t name. Those of us who have wanted a charger for our DualShock 3, know that there isn’t much quality options in the market. That’s why it’s nice to see Sony step into the game by releasing the DualShock 3 Charging Station (CECH-ZC2JYB). The device can charge two controllers at once and is plugged into an AC outlet, as opposed to the PS3’s USB ports, bypassing the need to have your PlayStation 3 unit on. This Charging Station is set to release on April 21st in Japan for 2,480 yen ($29). No word yet on a US release date.
