New Nielson Report Puts the PlayStation 3 Ahead of Xbox 360 in "Want" List

The Nielsen Company is out with a new list of likely purchases, which pits companies like Apple, Sony and Microsoft against each other for your money.  The two part survey first wanted to look at the purchasing habit of kids 6-12 (so really, what they want sense no 6 year old can afford a PS3 or iPad on their own) and found that 21% of them want a PlayStation 3 versus 18% who want a Nintendo Wii and only 14% who want a Xbox 360.

Next, the survey posed the same question to teenagers, ages 13 and above. Again, the PlayStation landed ahead of the Xbox 360 with 13% wanting one in the next 6 month, versus 8%. Oddly enough, in this category, the Nintendo Wii came on top at 15% which caters greatly to kids.

PS3 Firmware 3.55 Now Live

Just a quick little reminder, PS3 Firmware 3.55 is now live and will be needed if you are looking to jump online with your PS3. The firmware is being dubbed as “minor update that adds a security patch.” Probably has to do with more recent PS3 Jailbreaking efforts if I had to take a guess at it. PlayStation Plus members will note that their system should have already downloaded and installed the update for them.

Sony Bravia Update Adds Photo Sharing Capabilities

The already available Bravia Postcard App on Sony’s lineup of TV’s will be receiving a new update by end of the month that will give users photo sharing capabilities. Powered by Sony’s own Life-X online service, Bravia users will now be able to attach pictures from services such as Picasa and Flickr to create albums and slideshows and share them with other Bravia owner via a postcard. Although a fun app, the audience limited app update is further narrowed down to those who bought a Bravia set after February 2010, due to hardware limitations of previous units.

Sony Files for Multiple Touchscreen Patents, Possible PSP Play at Work

During the month of October, Sony Computer Entertainment of America filed for several patents, all pertaining to touchscreen technology. This should of course come to no surprise with the ever-growing popularity of touchscreen technology, which Sony already provides in devices like the Sony Xperia lineup and select Cyber-shot and Reader models. What’s interesting about these particular patents though is the suggestion that the back of the screen will give you touch response as well, something that is rumored in the PSP2. There is also other clever lawyer terminology which indicated an “enhance” or “transform” touch capability which is probably pointing towards pinch to zoom, but not in those words because Apple already owns that patent. Another patent points towards a ‘paste’ command, and another towards a “prediction engine” which seems to be based on the concept of shifting menus based on your current screen and behavior.

Sony Pictures to Distribute George Clooney's “The Ides of March”

George Clooney has picked up the rights to the play Farragut North by Beau Williamson and will be directing and starring in the film titled The Ides of March. According to SlashFilm, “Ryan Gosling will play Stephen Meyers, the young campaign mastermind to Governor Morris (George Clooney), who is campaigning for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Paul Giamatti is a rival candidate’s campaign leader. Marisa Tomei plays a New York Times reporter and Evan Rachel Wood an intern with whom Ryan Gosling’s character has a liaison.” With the main cast set and the movie to begin shooting soon, it was still a mystery on which studio would actually distribute this Oscar-aimed movie. Now we know that Sony Pictures has scooped up the film.

The studio will release The Ides of March in a limited theatrical run in December 2011, with a wide release to follow in January 2012. So they will get the picture out there in time to qualify for an Oscar, but not so much that it really has to directly compete with the other slate of December 2011 releases.

Breaking News: First Video of the PlayStation Phone (Updated with a Second Video)

On this site, we’ve talked extensively about a product that does not technically exist yet, the PlayStation Phone. So far, we have give you a pretty good idea of what the PlayStation Phone is and why it’s different from the PSP2. Now to top it all off, we have a video to share with you as well that shows the phones functionality to a certain extent, though we can’t take credit for filming it. Man, come on Sony, you have more leaks than the US Depart of Defense. *Rim shot for up to date joke*

Update 2: Now a second video, showing you the PlayStation icon…

"Angry Birds" Headed to the PlayStation 3 Next Year

Looking to expand on the ever popular iPhone game, Rovio’s CEO Peter Vesterbacka is looking to expand into gaming consoles, including the PlayStation 3. Though the game won’t be played with touchscreen controls like the iPhone (PlayStation Move maybe?) the CEO did say that this will indeed be much more then just a port over, instead “the pigs will be a lot more active than just being slingshotted at by birds.” Look for the game to be distributed via the PlayStation Network (PSN) some time in 2011.

PSP Firmware 6.35 Now Live, Adds Capability for Unlimited Cloud Music Service via Qriocity

Those who own a PSP or PSPgo can now boot up the system and scroll over to the system update to find a new firmware 6.35 available. The newest update in some time for PSP owners, 6.35 adds the capability for Sony’s cloud based music service, dubbed Qriocity. Users will notice that under the music tab, a new icon will give them access to the Qriocity service. Beating Apple to the punch, Qriocity is meant to be a unlimited cloud based music service, which users can log into and enjoy an endless amount of music. Think Pandora, but you actually have a say in what you want to listen to. Though the firmware is now live, those who proceed to use the service will only be greeted with the option of entering the app which then notifies them that the service is coming soon.

Sony has yet to announce the availability of the firmware or the price of membership for Qriocity, but this is a good indication that an announcement is to follow soon. Otherwise, the firmware would not be live. It will also be interesting to see when this firmware makes it onto the PlayStation 3 and other Sony devices as it adds a real cutting edge difference between Sony’s already do-everything device, other consoles, and even Apple.

Sony to Claim Half of eReader Market in Japan by 2012?

Although in the United States, the eReader market is being dominated by the likes of Amazon with their Kindle and Apple with the iPad, Sony sees a different future and opportunity in Japan. Sony has talked about how they wish to offer eReaders for Japan and it’s odd to think that they don’t, but the truth is that nobody has really has cracked the market in Japan yet. Fast forward a year later and now we know why Sony has been silent on this matter. Instead of releasing just a product with no ecosystem, Sony has been hard at work in creating an “elaborate e-book distribution platform” with local telecom operator KDDI which was their partner as well on their Sony Ericsson 16.1 megapixel phone. Reports peg an immediate launch, slated for early December with 5- and 6-inch readers to greet the first wave of customers with ¥20,000 ($237) / ¥25,000 ($297) price points. Part of Sony’s plan is to offer far more content than previous efforts with 20,000 books available during its initial launch and a lot more to come. This of course pales in comparison to Sony’s current offering of 1.2 million books in the United States where eReaders have a much more matured market. Sony is looking to sell over 300,000 units in the first  year and own half the market by 2012. That is, if the world doesn’t end.

Air Force PS3 Setup is World's 33rd Largest Computer

We wrote a long time ago about how the US Air Force had bought a ton of PlayStation 3s and linked them together to create a super computer. Now, we have a little more detail on this matter. After combining 1,760 PlayStation 3 units in coordination with 84 servers, the Air Force has gotten these cell processor units to become the “fastest interactive computer in the entire Defense Department” and the collective unit now ranks as the worlds 33rd largest computer. Another interesting thing to note is that all Blu-ray drives have been gutted from the units, presumably for safety reasons so no one can just upload any random content.

In the end, the Department of Defense seems to have gotten an amazing deal and power out of the cell powered PlayStation 3 units, going on to say:

PlayStation consoles sold for about $400. If you tried to buy a comparable technology, you’d have spent $10,000 per unit.

Sony Xperia X8 Starts to Get Android 2.1

Sony’s recently-launched Xperia X8 is finally setting into 2010 as well with an over-the-air update to Android 2.1 which is set to give the device features including 720p recording, integrated social networking, and five customizable home pages. The one catch is that not all Xperia X8 units are gaining this functionality immediately. Instead, Sony is using their eight-digit “SI-number” (e.g. 1242-4859) to determine when the update gets pushed out. Hit the jump at the bottom to see if you qualify yet for the Android 2.1 update.

Sony's 4.1 Million Shipped PlayStation Move Units Explained

The whole who-has-sold/shipped-more debate had died down for a while as PlayStation 3 had been gaining substantial market share throughout late 2009 and all of 2010 on the Xbox 360. Originally down as much as 10 million units, the PlayStation 3, which launched a year later than the Microsoft console with a considerably higher price then and still higher price now, sits only 4 million units behind. But all that changed with the launch of the PlayStation motion controller called the Move and the new camera gaming device from Microsoft, the Kinect. This time, Sony was able to launch their device a month ahead of the folks at Redmond with controllers ranging from $50 for a single controller and $99 for those who required the controller, camera and a game. Microsoft’s Kinect, on the other hand, costs $150 and with holiday shopping in full swing, both companies are back at it again, touting sales numbers.

Though the PlayStation Move launched a full month a head of the Kinect with a lower price, Microsoft still has more users to sell their device to, (the 4 million we talked about above). Also, because of its higher price point and higher-end appeal, the PlayStation 3 is definitely owned by the more adult demograph who is potentially less likely to care about motion gaming. Add that to the fact that the PlayStation 3 is actually ahead in sales versus the 360 in Europe and Asia, but is really behind in the United States by 10 million units, where the Kinect has launched and is enjoyed by a younger demograph, who are more likely to want this device, and we get a clearer view of the battleground.

However, with those odds, Sony has effectively shipped 4.1 million Moves since its October launch while Microsoft has sold 2.5 million units since its November launch.  This is where the sold/shipped debate comes into play. With 2.5 million Kinects sold, we know that there are that many houses that have the device. On the other hand, Sony’s 4.1 million units shipped means that there has been that many units sent to retailers but we don’t know how many have then in return been sold to consumers. Although these two different accounting practices make it hard to determine if Sony is ahead of Microsoft or not, we need to take into consideration that the Move was sold out for a month at retailers like Amazon, Toys”R”Us and Gamestop and is still extremely hard to find in stores. One has to assume that if they are indeed hard to find and retailers are wanting more, then the PlayStation Move has sold a substantial amount and it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that a good 3 million plus units are enjoyed at home, aka “sold”, otherwise, they would be easy to find in any store. As Sony put it,

“While we don’t disclose our exact sell-through number, the key is that our retailers continue to ask for more Move units and are taking every unit we can supply them with based on their sales.”
