Sony Airs New 3D Commercial Ad

What do you guys think? New 3D ad from Sony for their new lineup of 3D TVs.

Sony Vaio J All-In-One Gets A Touchscreen, And It's Cheaper

Let’s say that you have $900 to spend and you want a brand spanking new computer with lots of guts. Well, Sony wants to offer you something in return for your cash: the all new Vaio J. Sporting a 21.5-inch 1920×1080 touchscreen display, a Blu-ray player and your typical wireless N and webcam and microphone, this makes for a beautiful everyday computer. For those who want more power as well, you can configure the J series up to 8GB of RAM and a Intel Core i7 processor. Look for these units to come out next month so the current Vaio J you will see in stores and on the Sony website is not what I have just mentioned.

Sony Moves DVD/Blu-ray Disc Plant

By the end of the December, Sony will be shutting down its DVD and Blu-ray Disc plant in Gödöllö, Hungary and transferring its operations to another plant in Malaysia. Sony said the move, which is part of ongoing efforts to consolidate global operations and achieve better operating efficiencies with the projected market expansion of 3D-compatible Blu-ray players, would have no material impact on its financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011. The move makes sense overall in terms of efficiency. Mostly as the entire world continues to recover from the recession, many companies are turning inward to work on saving costs in order to hit the profit numbers they seek. This of course then turns into a good long term plan as the world economy picks up.

Playstation Home 1.36 Fix

I went to log into my Playstation Home account today to visit E3, but I noticed that there is a 1.36 update. With every attempt to run the update, my PS3 would restart itself. A little bit of research has led me to the following fix: if your PS3 restarts every time you attempt the update, next time you click on home, before pushing the X button to confirm the update, wait for the yellow light to stop flashing on your PS3 (this is indicating that the hard drive is in use). Once the yellow light has gone off, go ahead and click the X button to confirm and from there, it should take you a minute to finish the update.

Also as I noted, I will be visiting E3 via Playstation Home. Sony has created the entire E3 Sony floor virtually for Home users. There, you can watch the videos, check out exclusive content and win prizes as well as other surprises Sony has in mind for its Playstation Home users. So go ahead and fire up Home!

Sony Ericsson Makes Shakira Phone

I originally wanted to write Sony Ericsson and Shakira team up but whatever, that title works. Now don’t worry, your Sony phone’s hips wont shake like Shakira’s, but instead, it’s rumored that Sony is looking to followup its dominating Xperia 10 with another, smaller version that will be a higher model then the Xperia 10 mini, codename Shakira. So business-wise, it makes perfect sense. Lets just see if it’s actually a real phone. At this point, it’s of course a none brainer to presume that this will also boast Android on it and more than likely 2.1 by the time it gets released.

Cool PS3 Dock + Controller Charger

This isn’t as much as a direct Sony product (we’re Sony centered and not Playstation or specific device centered here) but this little dock has to be seen. Designed to work with the PS3 and the PS3 Slim, this rotating dock allows you to kick up your PS3 and swivel it around. But here comes the best part, rotate the TwistDock and you can dock 2 PS3 controllers. From there, the TwistDock is powered via a wall charger so your controller will charge even when your PS3 is off. Not enough? How about the fact that the TwistDock also comes with a 6 port USB hub? This means your PS3 can continue to look clean and sexy and you can plug all the equipment you want to your PS3. This is especially great for the PS3 Slim and its lack of 2 USB ports, compared to the 4 of the original PS3. There’s no price on this unit yet, but it should be out by September.

Sony Ericsson Phones To Gain Pressure-Sensitive Tactile Touchscreen?

Sony has a new and unique idea for its touch screen phones: a pressure sensitive screen, meaning the harder you push on the screen, the faster or slower (depending on the application) the unit will react. For iPhone users: think of when you flick the screen, the faster your flick, the faster the screen moves.  Sony has gone on record and stated that “commercialization might not be too far off” and that they want to bring it to the Sony Ericsson line “as soon as possible.”

As cool as a technology this is though, I fear it won’t matter much if Sony Ericsson doesn’t get their act together. Put it this way, Sony does make some amazing phones like the Xperia 10 but when was the last time you saw anybody in the states with a Sony phone? The problem is that Sony never works with a partner to give customers incentive deals to buy their phones. So instead of a price of $200-$300, they always have the normal $600 price and nobody in this day and age will pay that much for a phone. So until they partner up with AT&T and T-Mobile, things are not going to take off for them on the phone side, no matter how amazing of a new feature they put into them.

Sony E3 Conference Highlights

E3 is here!  Today I got the chance to watch a lot of the Sony Press conference at E3 via IGN streaming.  They have and will continue to stream all E3 conferences and videos in HD, I recommend watching it if you don’t have a chance to attend E3.  As far as all of the content that was mentioned, I don’t even know where to begin.  Two full hours of video, Sony talk, previews and changes were mentioned and I’ll go over some of the highlights and big Sony news.

Kaz Hirai was the first speaker talking about 3D gaming and what Playstation is doing for the industry. He said, “What Playstation did for Blu-ray, we’re now going to do it for 3D.” A few 3D games launched today on the PSN like “Pain” and “Wipeout.” A feature game they mentioned was “Killzone 3.” This is a huge title coming out in 3D with a February 2011 release date. I saw about 3 minutes of the footage online, not in 3D of course (sad face) but the game footage was action packed and with the crowd’s great response I’m sure it looks fantastic. Hirai continued to say that Sony is the first in authentic 3D gaming with over 20 games being released in 3D by March 2011. Some of these titles include: “Shaun White Skateboarding,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Motorstorm: Apocolyse,” “Gran Turismo 5,” “Sly Cooper,” “NBA 2K11” and “Ghost Recon.” A clip of “Gran Turismo 5” was also shown in 3D.  Also remember that these games are being created in 3D, no conversion will be done with these amazing titles.  Sony believes that 2010 will be remembered as the year Sony brought 3D to the gaming industry.

Next up was the Playstation Move, which will be released September 19th. Pricing was revealed for the move at $49.99 with the Navigation Controller being an extra $29.99.  You can purchase a bundle which will include “Sports Champions” and the controllers for $99.99.  Additional games are set to be priced at $39.99.

Men In Black 3D Teaser

We have been reporting plenty about Men In Black 3D; first about getting the cast back together and then setting a release date. Now, we have a little teaser from Will Smith himself and I have to say that I totally believe Big Willy.

Sony Kicks Competition With The Karate Kid

Oh man, you gotta love puns. Sony blocked the competition this weekend with the Karate Kid? Sony roundhouse kicked box office gold, all the way to the bank! Anyway, the puns are endless but the number of viewers were limited and Sony was able to fend off other big movies (like the A-Team, which is a fantastic movie by the way; I recommend checking it out) and be the number 1 movie at the box office by a wide margin.

  1. The Karate Kid ($55,655,805)
  2. The A-Team ($25,669,455)
  3. Shrek Forever After ($15,770,491)
  4. Get Him To The Greek ($9,942,405)
  5. Killers ($8,008,007)

This marks the debut film for Jaden Smith, son of Will Smith and Jackie Chan’s second highest opening, next to Rush Hour 2. The film worked with a $40 million budget, meaning Sony is already clear of costs for the movie and can only have further success here from its international release, as well as continued box office presence and eventual Blu-ray/DVD and download releases. I have to also congratulate Sony on selling the movie. Reviews in general have been extremely positive for the film but what the Sony marketing team was able to do for the film was to convey the story. It didn’t try to relieve the memory of the past Karate Kid films and it didn’t try to sell it on random action scenes. Instead, it told the audience the story conveyed by the film and the audience turned out in flocks to see it.

Gran Turismo E3 Trailer

It’s been far too long of a wait for Gran Turismo 5. I unfortunately got tired of playing the limited tracks on Prologue and I’m dying to play the full game. This new trailer includes a sort of historical look at the series along with sweeping shots, detailed car models, good music and a fully-rendered cockpit. Gran Turismo 5 will have over 950 cars and multiplayer online that will support up to 16 players. The game is rumored to be released November 2010.  Enjoy the video below.

New Sony 3D Commercial

What do you guys think? New 3D commercial from Sony. The idea is a 2D set versus the new 3D set.
