Uncharted Movie Delayed By Another Year

In the next 6 months, we’re going to be getting a whole lot of Uncharted love in the PlayStation world. Come October 9th, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection will land on PS4 where we get to revisit the first three chapters of the franchise in glorious 1080p/60fps. On top of that, expect new difficulty modes and balancing tweaks to the game.

Though delayed till early 2016, we’ll soon enough be getting our hands on Uncharted 4 which is already looking sublime. Unfortunately for us, that’s all the Nathan Drake we’ll be getting for some time as the previously scheduled Uncharted movie that was to land sometime in 2016 has been delayed.

According to Sony Pictures, the Uncharted movie is now scheduled for June 30th, 2017 and that’s ok. We’ve seen a number of directors (Seth GordonSeth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, David O. Russell) and actors, like Mark Wahlberg and Bradley Cooper, attached to the film, only to eventually drop out. Though this means that wider audiences won’t be introduced to the world of Drake for another two years or more, depending on if there’s another delay or not, it’s actually a good sign for gamers.

Uncharted_4_Nathan_Drake_Teaser_TrailerFor the most part, video games have had a hard time transitioning to movies and Sony knows this. For that reason, instead of rushing to production which could tarnish the brand, Sony Pictures is instead wisely delaying the film until they find the formula. After all, besides the fantastic gameplay, the reason Uncharted has resonated with gamers so much is because of the rich world and the characters that Naughty Dog has brought to life.

For Sony, this could be an entire film franchise that’s ready to blossom into something more than simply a game adaptation. Gamers should also take note of the films release date. While it could shift, with a mid-summer release date, Sony is setting up the film as a blockbuster contender and not another mid-year release. This is a clear sign that Sony is ready to invest in the film in a meaningful way.

The Uncharted film is currently being scripted by Zero Dark Thirty‘s Mark Boal.
