New Sony VAIO Laptop to Bend It Like Beckham

Sony Hybrid VAIO Tease

At the IFA 2013 in Copenhagen, Sony is expected to announce a slew of new products and one of them might be a new hybrid laptop that solves all of our problems. We’ve all been there when we’re enjoying our tablet but really need a full keyboard to pound out some serious work. Other times, we’re out and about or doing a presentation and wished we’d instead brought our tablet with  and didn’t need to lug around a notebook. While this might be a serious case of #FirstWorldProblems, it seems that Sony sees a market for a new product category that’s not quite tablet and not quite PC as the video after the jump demonstrates.

If you’re  anything like me, you’re a fan of Sony because of their dedication to quality and design. Earlier in the year, Sony refreshed their VAIO lineup with the new VAIO Fit series, VAIO Pro series, and a new VAIO Duo. If IPS displays, Intel Haswell processors, and cutting-edge PCIe SSDs weren’t enough to separate you from your money, today Sony unleashes a limited line, dubbed Sony VAIO | red edition.

Sony VAIO Pro

You’ve been clamoring for it and we’ve finally got the news you’ve been craving. Ever since the arrival of Windows 8, many wondered what the fate of the VAIO Z lineup would be. The series is known for its slim and powerful design but lacked touchscreen capabilities, a staple of Windows 8. As time went on, it became apparent that Sony would phase out what inventory they had of the Windows 7 laptop and so many looked to CES for an update pro line. When CES came and went, still no news came from Sony’s pro line, leaving many to wonder if Sony was exiting that category with a focus on consumer devices. Now, thanks to a tipster, we can announce that Sony will once again be entering the category with the unannounced Sony VAIO Pro Ultrabook.

Sony VAIO DUO 13-inch Leaked?

Sony VAIO Duo 13

Think what you may of Windows 8 but the VAIO Duo 11 is one mean machine. The hybrid laptop/slate combination is designed to give you what you want from a notebook in a post-PC era with flash memory, Intel Core i7 Processor, and full touchscreen compatibility. Slide the screen down and your notebook gets transformed to a Windows 8 tablet, all be it a thicker one. Now thanks a leaked video and press image, it seems that Sony is set to followup the VAIO Duo 11 (with an 11.6-inch screen) with a 13-inch variation.

Though the Sony VAIO Ultrabook T14 and VAIO T15, powered by Windows 8 were on full display at CES 2013, Sony managed to play coy with specifics like ship date, price, and specs. Now, Sony has announced the two units for Japan, giving us a clearer picture as to what we can expect from the two units though pricing still hasn’t been mentioned, even for the homeland. As expected, Sony will be releasing both units, sometime in Spring for the US while Japan will have their chance to buy each model on February 9th. After the jump, the VAIO T14 and VAIO T15 specs awaits you.

Sony VAIO Offers Most Innovative Windows 8 Lineup

Tap 20 in kitchen

We were recently invited to a Windows 8 launch party, hosted by Sony at the House of Rock mansion. The event was designed to give members of the press and Sony sales representatives hands-on time with their new fleet of notebooks and desktops. The event featured engineers and reps from Sony, Microsoft, and Intel who walked us through some of the latest features and answered all of our questions.

During our time there, we were able to poke and prod Sony’s latest VAIO fleet, running Windows 8 with and without touchscreen variations and to say we walked away impressed is an understatement. With a simplified lineup, more powerful options and innovative features, Sony’s new fleet is quite simply the most compelling reason to upgrade to the latest OS from Redmond which heavily relies on touchscreen.

Sony Updates VAIO E Series 14P with Intel Ivy Bridge Processor

Like most of us who might do some house cleaning around Spring time, Sony is approaching the new season by ousting the old and coming in with the new. In this case, the VAIO E Series 14P is getting the attention with the latest chipset from Intel which provides greater power with reduced power consumption. With the Intel i3 processor out of the picture, Sony has opted for the Intel Ivy Bridge processor with 2.1GHz Core i7-3612QM, capable of 3.1GHz with Turbo Boost. With more power from the chip, Sony is also allowing users two different options for their graphics card, with either the stock Intel’s HD Graphics 4000 or AMD’S Radeon HD 7670M. Now, let’s talk about the new screen.

Sony Chromebook VAIO VCC111 Appears At the FCC. We Have Specs and Pics

Over the weekend, an interesting product appeared at the FCC from Sony. The VAIO VCC111 which like all VAIO units sports a catchy number is different from other notebooks from Sony in that unlike those which run on Windows, this machine is powered by Google, your friendly neighborhood  search giant. The Chromebook is a separate project from Google’s Android efforts and is instead designed to give notebook owners and alternate option to Windows. The VAIO Chromebook, power by ‘Chrome OS’ is reliant on the web and Google’s many different services like Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs. As the name would suggest, the entire system is than based on this cloud based OS which is perfect for those who deal only with Google web content and horrible for just about everybody else who needs additional programs like Microsoft Office, iTunes, and Photoshop.

Sony Refreshes VAIO S Series for Spring

Just in time for spring (yes I know we’re still a bit away but work with me here!) Sony has decides to refresh the VAIO S series. Much like the recent VAIO Z series refresh, there are not drastic changes to the midrange lineup from Sony, instead new generations of previous processors and a slightly new design which allows them to utilize bigger batteries for improved longterm usability.

Start things with the processor, both the 13 and 15 model VAIO S series are getting the latest Intel i5 and i7 processors which mean an  i5-2430M processor (2.40GHz / 3.00GHz with Turbo Boost)  and a i7-2640M processor (2.80GHz / 3.50GHz with Turbo Boost). Sony is also offering a new and improved graphics option with the AMD Radeon HD 6630M (1GB). Hard drive options are aplenty this round with the addition of solid state drives.

  • 500GB (5400rpm) hard drive
  • 750GB (5400rpm) hard drive
  • 128GB (128GB x1) solid state drive
  • 256GB (128GB x2) solid state drive with RAID 0
  • 512GB (256GB x2) solid state drive with RAID 0
  • 1TB (512GB x2) solid state drive with RAID 0

With optional features like up to 8GB RAM, Blu-ray drive and standard 1366 x 768 (1600 x 900 on higher end 13″ and 15″) resolution screen, the VAIO S series gives the none professional crowd a lot to choose from with a $799 starting point.

Sony Refreshes VAIO Z Series for Spring

If you’re planning on purchasing a Sony VAIO Z, we recommend that you either make sure that you get a great deal on one or hold off for the latest spring refreshes. Unlike a traditional update which might see drastic changes, Sony is instead refreshing the VAIO Z for this spring with minor, but noteworthy, updates. First, out with the old and in with the new as Sony brings in the newest 2nd generation Intel processors which include the Intel i5 and  i7 with Turbo Boost speeds of up to 3.50GHz. Also gaining a speed boost are the hard drives with RAID 0 solid state drives.

New to the spring lineup is a Carbon Fiber Silver color option which bring the total color count to four ( joining Carbon Fiber Black, Carbon Fiber Gold, and Premium Carbon Fiber Black). With a 14-hour battery life and included Power Media Dock, the most substantial new feature might be the optional LTE modem with 4G network connectivity, giving those on the go a way to connect to the web, without having to seek a Wi-Fi signal. Weighing in at just 2.57 lbs., this $1849.99 13-inch laptop with AMD Radeon HD 6650M (1GB) graphics card and Blu-ray disc burner via the Power Media Dock is now available.
