Sony USA & UK XBR Road Map (leaked!)

Got some exciting news for those who are looking to purchase an XBR like myself. We have the leaked road map for the XBR series for 2008. This should help those who are looking to wait for the XBR 6, 7 and 8 or want to snatch up a good deal on the current XBR models as they will go on the inevitable sale when the new series hits the horizon. As Engadget reported, the new features include “Triluminos” RGB LED backlight, Advanced Contrast Enhancer PRO and BRAVIA Engine 2 PRO 1080p video processor. The XBR7 panels measure as large as 70-inches, and will launch in October, but sport features more in line with the XBR6. Everything is naturally 1080p and 120Hz.

PSN Cards. Come and Get Them. Soon

Even though the PSN cards have been spotted here and there, there not here yet. Its kind of like the Lockness Monster. So word comes that Meijers (mostly an Midwest thing) has a spot for the $20 and $50 cards up. This can only mean that its coming with firmware 2.4.

Sony Ericsson To Bring Wi-Fi and More To Digital Cameras

According to a new patent, if Sony can have their way, were going to be having more options then just built in Wi-Fi or Eye-Fi cards. This comes in the form of offering both built in or card or attach on accessories with GSM, CDMA, WiMAX in addition to the already available Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options. This means that the minute your camera is in your home network, you can begin to transfer your pictures to your computer without needing to hunt down a USB cord or taking the card out and inserting it into your card reader. With built in Wi-fi, this can also open up the possibilities of directly publishing your photos (current iPhone and .Mac users can publish photos directly to their Web Gallery) or being able to email out photo’s without the need of a computer. The less cords, the happier I am so sign me up for this but this better damn happen cause I signed up for flying cars by the year 2000 and I still cant get 25MPG!

1 Million! Billion! Fafilion Japanese PSN Members

During the first year of the PS3 (and good god, was it a long year for Sony fans) Microsoft had no real competition would always come on stage with random numbers. How many times users clicked on a button and how long a download took per cat life seconds. Now in year two, although the PS3 is still one year in production cycle behind and still pricier, continues to out sell or be neck in neck with the 360.(Funny how the only number Microsoft dosent want to throw out there is the 360 failure rate) With that tradition of course comes, NUMBERS! Now recently, many have noted that Japanese developers are falling behind their western counterpart and I believe part of that is due to their lack of online embrace while most western game have some form, if not a very comprehensive online mode. So its no surprise to see slower adopt rate for the PSN in Japan. But no more! as PSN user mark has crossed the 1 Million mark in Japan. Its really a surprise that it took so long because of such a higher Wi-Fi adoption (makes downloading content from the PSN to the PS3 to the PSP) and much more PS1 classics on the Japanese PSN store. But we congratulate the 1 Million Online Members of Japan and challenge them to some Grand Turismo 5 or Metal Gear Online. Friendly of course.

Sony To Make Motion Control Remote?

According to a website called PlayStation Lifestyle, a small focus group has been in charge of testing out a Wii-like controller for the PS3. Apparently the device was mounted on a foot-tall mini-tripod, and was demoed with tennis, fencing, and paintball mini-games, as well as used to play Quake on a laptop. Now, of course, just because there is a focus group on hand, doesn’t mean there is an actual product that’s coming out, but with that in mind, many forget the fact that the PS3 is already equipped with motion control. Although it still baffles my mind that the Wii has only 3 sensors while the PS3 has 6 and yet developers (most) can’t put them to good use yet. Even so, I don’t think Sony really needs to introduce a Wii-like remote to be successful because it’s a very different machine.

The Wii is not successful because of the fact that it’s just a simple controller. It’s the fact that the device is cheap, the device is filled with colorful, large, toony characters, it’s kid-friendly and new older generation gaming adult friendly. Put all those factors and you have an attractive product to the family crowd and those who are not familiar with the gaming world, the so-called casual gamers. If Sony were to introduce such a controller, they still have to overcome the fact that their system is priced much higher, it has more buttons/ports on it and once you boot in, there are a lot more options (though I’m sure you can over come all this with a firmware that enables a easy setup mode or a more advanced mode, although the unit is already extremely user friendly imho). But we also have to take note that although with exceptions, 90% of titles that do well on the Wii are made from Nintendo, and not 3rd party. That means Sony would have to dedicate an entire new division to focus on Wii-like games while 3rd party developers attempt to catch up and create such content and they’re already behind enough as it is with the PS3.

So then what should Sony do? I think Sony needs to continue on its focus that it started with the PS2. One of the clear things that Sony has been offering with every new PlayStation is groundbreaking technology. They have always brought something new and something of the future to users. To me, going with the SoniiMote is not the way or with tradition. Instead, Sony should focus their attention to the PlayStation Eye, formerly, the EyeToy. The PS Eye offers everything that the WiiMote can, except with less hassle and more simplicity. With the PS Eye, Sony can go one step further and really bring the future to their users and they already have the technology in place and the developer house. But putting all that aside, one of the revolutions that’s coming to technology is touchscreen, thanks to the iPhone. With the iPhone, over 4 million users are now fluent with touchscreen technology, and that’s only growing with many knockoff iPhones, the new 3G iPhone and many new touch platforms that Sony is introducing, like the X1. How does the PlayStation Eye fit into all of this? Think Minority Report. Imagine the capability to boot up the PS3 and while sitting on the couch, as you wave your hand, pointed towards the screen from left to right, you beginning to scroll through the XMB. Once you stop on photos, you wave your hand, up or down to scroll through the photo section till you find the folder you want. With a slight wave or pushing forward gesture, the folder opens and you are again, able to scroll through more photos. Now, just like the iPhone offers the pinch option to zoom in and out of photos, why not the same with the PlayStation Eye? Once on an image, wave your hand to select/open it and as you expand your hands apart from each other, the photo also expands. Now this is all off course UI but the same core philosophy can be attributed to games and we have seen that to a lesser extent already.

The only obstacle Sony faces with this vision is a dedicated gaming engine, like the Unreal Engine for many FPS or the White Engine that SquareSoft Square-enix uses for their up coming Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Because once a power and functional engine aimed at the PlayStation Eye and motion control is built, Sony can then license this to other developers to help extend the reach of the PlayStation Eye. So if a real funding, marketing and functional engine are put behind this idea, the PlayStation Eye has the capability to far outshine any motion controller and really capture the imagination of developers and the public.

I have said this many times but I believe that the PlayStation has the capabilities to cater to many different segments while other consoles have a much narrower user base. This means that Sony also has to realize the potential of their machine because Sony already offers a free online community while competitors either charge or have a nonexistent service. With PSN, Sony has the capability to reach the entire PS3/PSP user base and offer them not only gaming content, but also media content. We must not forget that Sony also commands very powerful music (SonyBMG) and film divisions (Sony Pictures). That again means that every PS3/PSP user can be connected to all forms of digital media while the PS3 still boasts the best Blu-ray player out there. Furthermore, the PS3 is extremely flexible when it comes to media content and offering the capability to stream music/video/photos from both Macs and PC to it over a network. And of course, this means that the PlayStation Eye can be yet another branch of the PlayStation 3. Targeting the more casual gamers with something new, exciting and yet totally different and revolutionary while still being a powerful machine to live up to all those who are still the core gaming community. One device. Multiple audiences.

Firmware 2.4 Between June 10-18

We all know its coming. Well, we have actually known sense PS3 launch so its safe to say that its coming. Now with a video leak from developers, and more murmurs from both Sony, a few dates are being tossed around. A few of the sites are claiming that June 10th is going to be the much awaited launch date while PS Only claims that the June 10th date is actually incorrect, but do go to state that In game XMB is indeed confirmed and Trophies is a maybe. If the update does indeed go live, many also speculate that custom Soundtracks while also come witch means that instead of the game music, you will be able to bring up the XMB, go to your music section and select any song you wish, instead of the game soundtrack.

Now, this option isn’t a deal breaker for anybody I personally don’t like it. First, the idea isn’t just appealing to me but more, I feel like this takes away from the game. Imagine watching Indiana Jones without hearing the Indy theme or playing Final Fantasy 7 and not hearing Sephiroth theme kick in. I feel like when a developer scores a game, to the same extent that when a composer scores a movie, that given sheet music is designed to extend and expand the game via the emotion it can bring. It can help heighten the excitement or the tragedy of a scene. Imagine during the ending of Final Fantasy X, instead of hearing the Zanarkand Theme as Tidus hugs Yuna and starts to go away, your hearing Toxic. Just not the same effect.

Out With MotorStorm, In With MGS4

Its Spring Summer cleaning and its not just something you do/should do. Sony is also doing the same. By that, we of course mean that their killing one of their most popular bundles that’s helped not only the Motorstorm community grow and be one of the biggest PS3 games, but has also helped the PS3 sales and the PS3 community with a good priced bundle. We say our solutes to the PS3 MotorStorm bundle. *Moment of Silence*

Now that were down with that, here comes the new. For $499, you will be getting a 80GB PS3, Dualshock 3 and of course, Metal Gear Solid 4. Not a bad finish and the PS3 still continues to be the best Blu-ray players out there. So look for the bundle to hit on June 12th.

Firmware 2.4 Facts = In Game XMB and Trophies Rumors

Call me old fashion but I don’t like kids. They keep demanding this and that. I remember the good ol days when we had a tire a stick (look it up). So as a new firmware is starting to loom towards a release date, so do rumors of In Game XMB and recently added trophies. Now, I have no problem with the Trophies rumors as that’s fairly new (Only sense 2.1 did these rumors start). But really? In Game XMB? That rumor has been around sense firmware .2. Plus its not like any other console out there has this and this has been promised for a long time and is always used as a comparison tool to show lacking capabilities that the PS3 could offer but has not yet offered. So with that in mind, lets start a new rumor shall we? How about DTS-HD Support?

As Always Hit the MagicButton for a teaser from Sony and a Word from me about the Image Header.

Sony Launches VGF-HS1 Media Server

Sony is launching its new home media server in Japan with its latest multimedia server and NAS drives. The 1TB VGF-HS1 and 1.5TB VGF-HS1s both boast Gigabit Ethernet, DLNA compatibility and integrated display, USB connectivity and a nicely hidden multicard reader behind the front panel for extra sexiness. Both units are play nicely with a variety of formats, including (AVCHD, MPEG2, HDV, JPEG, BMP, PNG, WAV, MP3, ATRAC, AAC and WMA). The units hold a ¥60,000 ($570) / ¥80,000 ($760) price point but so far, no word on them coming over the States.

If a product like this properly marked and thats something that I feel Sony misses the cue on alot, it can really be a shinning become in the wide array of products that Sony offers as people’s digital lives continue to grow with more and more people turning to digital downloads (legal or not) and as more people download movies (again, legal or not) and as more people continue to only take digital pictures. What better way to bridge your computer room/bedroom to your living room, then a Media Server like this? I feel as though Sony releases to many fantastic products but because a lack of marketing, they just sit there, never to be heard of because of lack of proper presentation.

Dual $hock 3 Gives Back $11 Million

The year that keeps giving to Sony continues on a roll that in April alone, $10.9 million worth of Dual Shock 3 controllers were sold in the United States. This comes after a bitter lawsuit that Sony and Immersion went through where I guess after 10 years, Immersion remembered that they had some form of BS patent on the rumble (www.techdirt.com, a fantastic site to read about our broken patent system). Now many things can attribute to the sales numbers. The fact that the PS3 has been doing so well and beating out the 360 month to month can show why the Dual Shock numbers alone would be so high as more people pickup a PS3, usually an extra controller comes with it. But there is also the fact of those who were upgrading their current controller to get a little Rumble back in their lives. We can only assume these numbers are going to rise as the adoption rate of the PS3 raises but because the PS3 has many killer titles lined up for the year like Grand Turismo 5: Prologue and GTA4 (both launched) but many up coming titles as well like Metal Gear Solid 4, Bioshock, Socom, LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2 to name a few.

Africa To Stay Out Of Europe

Remember two years ago, when we all saw a teaser for something called Africa? Well, after that, all was quite on the Sony front till another year where we saw a new glimps of Africa but sense then, nothing new has been heard of the game. Many have even started to speculate that the project indeed was dead. Well, there can be some truth to that, if you live in Europe as Sony has just announced that Africa will be only for Japan and the United States. No real reason is given to why Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is not going to publish the game. We can only speculate that its due to the localization and translation nightmare that comes with many European headed games.

Sony’s 0.3mm OLED TV

(Yes, that is the TV, in the glass!)

So you thought you had bragging rights about your new XBR? Howard Stringer today at D6 with his Sony’ OLED is laughing at you as we speak. The new OLED are as this as a pack of playing cards and boast a mind blowing 940 x 540 resolution at 11-inches. Sony is promising to have a 27-inch very soon (and by that, they mean as soon as it makes sense to make them because these guys are currently damn expensive). Stay tuned for an actual run down of what OLED is and what makes it so mind bending thing.

New Hybird Fuel Cell Battery Coming

Every been in a situation where you wanted to use your Phone or Portable gaming device for more then 6 hours? You ran out of battery you say? So should we even forget the idea of being gone for a few days and not being able to charge? Well Sony is going to say yes, use your device for more then 6 hours and charge only every few days. Sony’s new hybrid fuel cell 1.2 x 2″ battery prototype has been able to keep the power for 14 hours to a cellular video broadcast. This micro fuel system comes with a secondary Li-Polymer battery to help it deal with electronic peak loads. The Sony Material Laboratory’s R&D team told spectators at the Small Fuel Cells 2008 expo that its looking to push this new battery technology out “soon”.

OLED Coming To Sony’s Pro HD Camcorders

Those who are working in the broadcasting field are about to get a nice upgrade as Sony is bringing its OLED screens to the viewfinders of the new HDVF-EL100. The 11 inch, 960 x 540 pixel screen is designed to accept wide angles and deep contrast rations, in order to help operators achieve the accurate focusing thats required for HDTVs. Pro cameramen rejoice as having done 2nd AC work, its nice to look at something thats accurate and not have to rely on the control room or studio village.

Sony Rolls in new Colors (Pun Intended)

I must admit, I’ve been on the verge of writing a post on why Sony needs to stop wasting its money on useless products and should focus its funds on other divisions. One of the products I had target was the Rolly. But after my recent trip to Japan, I must admit, the little guy has won me over (either that or the beautiful girls who were demoing them). So it seems like Sony is not only going forward with these guys, but also bringing out new colors for an extra ¥1,500 (about $15) on the ¥40,000 (about $400) units.
