Sony Drops ‘Magnetic Fluid Speakers’ from Its 2016 X930D Flagship TV

CES_2016_Sony_X930D_No_Speakers

Besides looking aesthetically remarkable, especially when you look at the X930D as it spins around, you’ve likely noticed that the 4K HDR TV has shed some weight when compared against the 2015 X930C. That’s because, unlike Sony’s 2015 lineup of 4K TVs, which included the ultra-slim X900C and the flagship X930C with its built-in Magnetic Fluid Speakers, the 2016 lineup is just the X930D.

Sony X930C - Magnetic Fluid SpeakersInstead of creating two different high-end televisions that cater to different consumers, Sony has combined the two lineups, offering us one of their best looking televisions ever with deep blacks and bright whites while also playing into what consumers feel they want: even slimmer televisions. As someone who was a huge fan of the X930C, I truly appreciated the Magnetic Fluid Speakers which made setup far less complicated, that is to say that in our condo, we could have a TV that not only looked stellar, but one that provided audio that rivaled many surround sound systems without the hassle of dealing with all the wires.

The reality however is that in that equation, I’m the outlier and that Sony’s flagship series is primary targeted at home theater enthusiasts and wealthy consumers who likely already had surround sound or would have purchased one along with their new TV.

This meant that the X930C was priced higher than its competitors and was even seen as less aesthetically attractive, due to its bulkier design. Making matters worse, a segment of the community also complained that due to the speakers on the side (which were not removable), the X930C was harder to mount as you had extra inches on each side (pictured right). This is especially important for TVs that are mounted inside cabinet like fixtures or bedroom walls with limited space.

Though perhaps now a little less unique, Sony dropping their Magnetic Fluid Speakers is likely the right thing to do. More after the jump.

Optional Wall Mount Hangs the 4K HDR Sony X930D TV Like a Picture Frame at 1.5-inches Away

Sony_4K_HDR_X930D_07

At its thinnest point, the 4K HDR Sony X930D is just .19-inches thick thin. For reference on how insanely thin that is, just look at the picture above. Though quite obvious when sitting on a stand, the X930D can lose its charm when wall mounted if typical mounts are used. That’s because most solutions found on Amazon or Best Buy usually result in your TV sitting a few inches away from the wall.

This usually isn’t a problem for most TVs but when one of the major selling points of your TV is how thin its design is, it becomes a bit of a letdown when once wall mounted, it can look like any other TV. Lucky for would-be owners, Sony has a solution. Enter the optional SU-WL810 wall mount which allows the 4K HDR TV to only sit at 1.5-inches away from the wall.

Sony Gets Into Home Automation With Their 4K HDR Android TVs

CES 2016 Sony Home AutomationOut of left field (literally in that we were walking throughout the Sony booth and ran into this on our left side), Sony has decided to get into the ever growing home automation field. The move shouldn’t be much of a surprise, seeing how the company is working on its own smart lock solution with the Qrio. But at CES, Sony was ready to take a more compelling route
by integrating existing solutions in their 4K HDR X930D TVs.

In short, instead of needing to release their own bridge, blinds, lights, and whatever else that you might want, Sony is incorporating Logitech Harmony support in their latest TVs. Once connected, you can port scenes created on your Harmony unit and activate them with just a few clicks, right on your TV. Here’s a preview of a setup in action:

Giving the 4K HDR Sony X930D a Spin at CES 2016

Sony X930D 4K HDR

Just yesterday, we detailed the newly announced 4K HDR Sony X930D. Designated as the company’s 2016 flagship TV, the X930D packs in the latest Android TV software in a beautifully slim design. Here is a brief look at it.

Sony XBR-X850D (55”, 65”, 75” & 85”) Announced

X850D

The highlight from the Sony CES 2016 press conference was their latest 4K HDR X930D. Available in 55-, 65-, and 75-inch (X940D) variants, the newest TV from Sony is the only model being shown on the floor and talked about. While Kaz Hirai did hint that other models could arrive in 2016, clearly Sony wants to focus and only talk about the X930D which they call their flagship unit.

However, on Sony’s own press portal, there is information about another 4K HDR TV, the XBR-X850D. When I asked about it on the show floor, nobody knew anything about the model and after talking with a few Sony reps, curiously their press portal is down. Not to worry though since I have all the revealed information after the jump.

Meet the 2016 Sony 4K HDR XBR-X930D & X940D

Sony_4K_HDR_X930D_4

Earlier today during his annual CES keynote, Kaz Hirai, Sony CEO and President unveiled the company’s latest 4K HDR televisions. Dubbed the XBR-X930D and XBR-X940D, the newest Android TVs build on their predecessors with an even thinner design, due to a lack of Magnetic Fluid Speakers with full HDR compatibility from day one.

Mike Fasulo (pictured above), President and COO of Sony Electronics:

Sony knows HDR from the lens to the living room – we were among the first to use cameras that film in 4K and HDR and have been on the forefront of offering consumers technology that can bring the stunning experience of 4K and HDR into their homes. Our new lineup of 4K HDR televisions is proof of our continuing efforts to bring the latest and greatest technologies to market that will provide the best home entertainment experience.

After the jump, a whole lot of details on the Sony 4K HDR X930D and X940D TVs.

New Software Update Available for Sony’s Android TV

Sony_4K_Android_TV

A new software update is available on Sony’s Android TVs which include both HD and 4K models. The update brings with it

  • Responsiveness of the IR remote control
  • Occasional black screen while powering on the TV
  • Occasional black screen with sound when switching off the TV
  • TV rebooting during channel changing

Most recently, Sony had to delay their much promised HDD recording on Android TV.

Sony Delays HDD Recording on 2015 Android TVs

Sony_4K_TV_Official

One of the features that will eventually make its way to Sony’s 2015 HD and 4K Android TVs will be the ability to record video. Specially, via a software update, Sony was going to enable USB HDD recording and PIP/PAP. Though destined for Europe only, the feature has once again been delayed. That’s because Sony had originally promised the additional functionality by Fall and will now instead deliver it sometime in 2016.

More details after the jump.

Sony X900C 4K TV “Is a Solid, Future-proofed Set”

Sony_4K_X910C_Review_1

Chances are, the next TV you’ll buy will be a 4K set if you plan on spending anything over a $1,000. Compared to just a few years ago, prices have dramatically fallen, making the new format far more affordable for the average consumer that doesn’t need the mos high-end features out there. For it’s part, Sony is offering 3 distinct 4K TV lines – the entry level X830C/850C, ultra-thin X900C/X910C, and the high-end X930C/X940C with HDR and Magnetic Fluid Speakers.

While the entire line is worthy of your consideration, perhaps the most interesting of them is the X900C which is

1.5 inches at its thickest point and just 0.2 inches at its thinnest

As Andrew Tarantola writes

Even with the tabletop stand, the 55-inch version that I reviewed weighs less than 40 pounds, making it light enough to set up by myself. (The 65- and 75-inch versions come in at 51 and 74 pounds, respectively.) Installing the stand is straightforward as well: Just slap the pre-assembled feet onto the rear of the set and tighten on a pair of screws for each side. In all, I spent more time trying to fit all the foam packing bits back into the box than I did assembling the set.

So we know getting it out of the box and setting it up is easy but what about the TV itself?

Sony Pictures Reveals Their 4K HDR Films, Includes ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

Sony_X930C_4K_HDR

Sony Pictures and Sony Electronics have been quietly setting the stages for a future of 4K HDR content. In just the past week, Sony Pictures announced a partnership with Dolby Vision which would help the Hollywood studio master 4K HDR movies for release as physical media and digital download. Following that announcement, Sony Electronics revealed to our delight an expanded firmware update that would bring HDR compatibility to a far larger number of televisions than previously revealed.

Now we’ve learned some of the first titles that will be getting the 4K HDR treatment from the Sony Picture catalogue which can be found after the jump.

Sony Brings 4K HDR to More TVs Than Previously Thought

Sony_XBR_X900C

Perhaps the biggest improvement yet to TVs, 4K HDR televisions are easily distinguishable from their none HDR counterparts with brighter and higher contrast visuals. At CES 2015, Sony revealed that their flagship X930C and X950C 4K televisions would offer the tech via a firmware update.

Now Sony has revised that claim for the better by bringing HDR to additional TVs.

Curved Sony S85C 4K TV Now Available

Curved_Sony_S85C_1Sure, they’re not selling like hot cakes – or perhaps even selling – but Sony knows that there are some out there who like curved TVs. To that end, the company has announced the S85C, their newest 4K TV powered by Android TV. Available in 55- and 65-inch, the S85C is built on the X850C line with the obvious difference of being curved. More details including price and spec after the jump.

The Lackluster Unboxing Experience of Sony TVs

Sony_X900C_Unboxing_1

Earlier this month, we brought you the unboxing video from the Sony X900C. Now, the video itself was from Sony but with such videos, it gave you an overview of what you can find inside the box and how best to take it apart. Only problem is, while the final product is a beautiful piece of technology that anybody would love to display in their home or office, the experience of getting to it is simply underwhelming. Before I get ahead of myself, go ahead and watch the unboxing here and then meet me after the jump for some thoughts.

Ultra-thin Sony X900C 4K TV (X900C & X910C) Now Available in US & Europe

Sony_XBR_X900C

You know those beautiful and ultra-slim Sony 4K TVs (the X900C and X910C) that we’ve been telling you all about for the past 6 months? Well they’re finally available for purchase in the US and Europe. Coming in at just .2-inches thin, the X900C series is the world’s thinnest 4K TV and was shown off at CES 2015. Since that time, Sony has launched a series of other 4K TVs, including their flagship X930C & X940C with HDR though if you’re looking for something less feature-packed, you can always opt for the X830C 4K sets which start at just $1,299.

More details after the jump.

Insanely Thin Sony X900C 4K TV Gets Unboxed

Sony_X900C_VideoThe Sony X900C series (X900C and X910C) is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the world’s most beautiful TV. Coming in at just .2-iches thick thin, once mounted on the wall, the 4K TV all but disappears. Besides an insanely thin design and beautiful visuals, thanks to Sony’s 4K X-Reality PRO engine, the X900C also offers Android TV which promises to make your TV finally feel up to par with your phone or tablet.

If you’re like me and can’t wait to see more of this TV, a quick video unboxing by Sony might be just what you needed.
